The LDs were usually rental prohibited and “only” 9800. The reason VHS prices on JP VHS are even crazier than LD prices is the rental tax added on. Meanwhile rental tapes in the US were nearly the same price. They were over $110 per copy for things like The Pelican Brief or Showgirls. The LD would be same day for $40, the retail VHS would be months later, often the next calendar year, only $20-40 or so.

There are numerous reasons why Japanese won’t haggle on a price. That’s separate from why the final episode of Giant Robo cost $100. With OVAs in their original run YOU the fan pay for EVERYTHING. And it won’t be Spotify cheap unless you want Aqua Teen Hunger Force quality art.
TV series were usually put on LD at four per disc and that disc being somewhere between $50 and $100 depending on the show. TV series are by no means guaranteed to already be profitable by the time they hit video. Gundam, for example, was cancelled. It was losing money. It was also off the air for almost two decades before it even hit video which was newly remastered with all new art on the discs by top tier talent. It cost $800 for the set, even though it’s a little short.
Some sets earlier on like Gatchaman I and Holmes Detective had prices sorta crazy, IIRC. It took until about 1991 before the way of doing TV anime on LD was standardized.
