The question begs. What is the absolute best edition of Akira out there then? The 2009 US Blu? Is the 2009 UK/EU Blu the same version?

If it was produced on 70mm film then that is the best version.

I would say this 4K BD for the high level of detail and the Laserdisc for the "film" analogy nature of this format.

That's not a true 70mm print though? But yeah, if I lived on a ranch and had the space for a 70mm projector in my living room and also won the Powerball lottery then yeah, I'd go for a 70mm set up.

The 1080p Blu Ray from the 3 disc set? Have there been any comparisons done with it yet?

Was it in fact shot on 70mm or was it just upsized for the roadshow?

I’m guessing the later but I honestly don’t know a lot about this movie.

IMDb says "shot on 35mm" and "blown-up to 70mm" for a theatrical run.

I did find 70mm AKIRA movie reel cuts for sale online.

And just now I find out that an IMAX release of AKIRA supposedly happened last April 3rd in Tokyo but... State of emergency in Tokyo was declared on April 7th and TOHO closed all of its 1,500 screens from April 8th.

How many people could have seen AKIRA IMAX in 5 days?

https://www.toho.co.jp/movie/lineup/akira_imax.html

Will it be rescheduled or just dropped with the 4K available?

Akira was supposed to be animated for 70mm but the budget did not allow it. So it was animated in 35mm and the 70mm was just a blowup of the 35mm version with a 6 track sound mix in Dolby Stereo.

It is not all that strange a practice either because Final Yamato also had a 70mm version and that was done on 35mm also. Although 70mm prints for anime are rather rare.

as for the 4K UHD disc there is a noticeable amount of noise reduction. Being scanned directly from the negative it should have natural film grain. Not in the amount you would get with a 35mm release print or 70mm blowup, but it should not look like it was animated on a computer or in cgi.

It is such a disappointment because the 4K has nicer colors and better overall definition but they had to degrain it to the point of the blu ray being preferable.

I think most 70mm theatrical prints were blowups. It does make for a better image but not as much as if it were native. The cost of actually shooting 70mm, particularly in live action, is ridiculous. Just making room for the gear and reels is hard.

Rescheduled in both 4K or IMAX, back on the big screen from June 5th until 11th.

Finally!

https://www.zoom.co.uk/product/akira_limited_edition_4k_ultra_hd_blu_ray_uhd

Use code SIGNUP10 and Guest Checkout to get a fiver off.

It's out in Europe end of November and in the USA end of December. It's a DNR disaster but I think it should be purchased to ensure we keep getting anime and physical media in general.

Jeff has it if you want the USA version.

I immediately pre-ordered a copy of the box through Zavvi UK when I got their newsmail. Still one of my absolute favorites when it comes to animated movies - can't wait to watch it!!!

Speaking of the rare anime actually shot on wide format, apparently Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer was shot on VistaVision, along with Lupin: Mystery of Mamo and Venus Wars. I was rather surprised by this as most theatrical anime of that era were open matte or Academy ratio and figured the same went for UY2, with the DVD/BD editions just crops but with a VV negative probably nobody since the original production crew has seen the entire 1.5:1 frame.

Apparently the 4K release does not include the original JP stereo, just the 5.1, because Funimation decided some musty old dub was more important. And they're just porting that release to the UK as well since they own Manga UK now.

There's a review of the UK disc up on AVF now. Interesting in that it differs from the Japan disc slightly.

https://www.avforums.com/reviews/akira- ... view.18222

I note one comment says Jeff isn't dispatching orders until mod-January 2021. I pre-ordered from Zoom and mine was dispatched earlier this week. Got the 2011blu too to mux the JP 2.0 track in to it. Need the blu with the Streamline dub now to finish an ultimate edition to drop on my NAS.

It seems odd that the UK and Japan discs are slightly different in features. I wonder what the reason was?

Ah, thanks for the AVF link. I also received a mail from Zavvi UK earlier this week telling me that my preorder of Akira has been dispatched so it should arrive at my home any day now... can't wait to watch it!

I cancelled my US release order and ordered the Japanese release. It looks like the Japanese release has everything the US/UK release have plus HDR and Japanese 2ch LPCM soundtracks.

So THAT’S how they’re going to make the JP version superior. They were going to do it one way or another.

I think no HDR is a defect and they will release a replacement program but i hate to follow up on these defect replacement programs.

I just received my copy today. It doesn't show on the back ANY Japanese Audio tracks for the 4K disc. Surely that's a printing error?
