I fell from my chair when I looked up online if these were still available and how much were the ones I already own worth after so many years.

These are the SRGS xxxx and ESGA xxx releases.

If you own some of them, check their market value. Just sold (after 1h of being listed) "Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior" for $200 no question asked.

I thought all the early 2.0 SACD only Japan releases sold out decades ago...

Turns out some of them resurfaced (from SONY's vault?) recently.

Ex: Jaco Pastorius / Jaco Pastorius - [ESGA-501]

Not many in this line of numbering:

  • Michael Jackson / Thriller [ESGA-503]
  • Celine Dion / All The Way - A Decade Of Songs [ESGA-504]
  • Gloria Estefan ‎– Greatest Hits [ESGA-505]
  • Jeff Beck / Blow By Blow [ESGA-506]
  • Luther Vandross / Never Too Much [ESGA-508]
  • Carole King / Tapestry [ESGA-509]
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan / Couldn't Stand The Weather [ESGA-512]
  • Wham! ‎/ Make It Big [ESGA-514]

I've got Carol King Tapestry on a 2.0 MoFi SACD. Is the Sony version different?

This one had quite a few releases:

USA 2.0 (1999) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/4848526
UK 5.1 (1999) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/9170715
USA 5.1 (1999) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/2078492 and https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/12106037
Japan 2.0 (2000) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/10349183
MFSL 2.0 (2013) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/5375857
Japan 2.0 (2017) - https://www.discogs.com/Carole-King-Tapestry/release/11051557

The 2000 Japan SACD is not on DRDB but the 2017 is here: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/141772 DR=12
The MFSL is: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/51551 DR=11

Clearly a different mix.

Okay, thanks for that. I'm happy with my version but would be interesting to hear the Sony. Not $200+ interesting though..

Ended up getting the MSFL version of Tapestry as well as:

Bill Withers ‎– Bill Withers' Greatest Hits
T. Rex ‎– Electric Warrior

I only have the MFSL, Sony Japan was too expensive to find.

But I did find a cheap J.S. Bach* / Glenn Gould ‎– Goldberg Variations BWV 988 [SRGR 743 ]

Cool, I like the MFSL of Tapestry, sounds fine to my ears but it's the only version I've ever heard.

You'd have to start by defining "better than SACD" first.

I'm ripping the SACD right now to have it measured (foobar2000 1.5.3 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1).

It's probably based on the same SONY 1999 SACD remaster that hit the CDs in 2000.

It would appear that the first CD release (1988 in Japan, 1991 rest of the world) had better dynamics.

It's not!

It's as good as the early CD releases: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/173956

Looks like it is better than the normal CD version or am I reading those reports wrong?

Is Teen Town on that album? Preferably a live version. Weather Report always seemed to play it much faster live' I find the album version far too slow.

What a talented guy he was too. Like all the genius, gifted musicians he left us far too soon.

The CD reports got 9 tracks but only 7 showing in the summary.
But ranges are the same. Low DR = 13, High DR = 15, Album DR = 14.

There used to be a PS3 (early model playing SACDs) trick that I never used.

Right now a few BD Players from last decade were using a particular chip from Mediatek (MT8580 and MT8550).

These are the current device list (taken from this post on audiophilestyle.com):

Sony brand compatible Blu-ray players:
BDP-S390/BX39
BDP-S490
BDP-S590/BX59
BDP-S4100
BDP-S5100/BX510
BDP-S790
BDP-S6200/BX620
BDP-S720

Pioneer brand compatible Blu-ray players:
BDP-80FD
BDP-160
BDP-170

Oppo brand compatible Blu-ray players:
BDP-103 and 103D
BDP-105 and 105D

Cambridge brand compatible Blu-ray players:
Azur 752BD
CXU

Arcam brand compatible Blu-ray & CD/SACD players:
FMJ UDP411
FMJ CDS27

Primare brand compatible Blu-ray player:
BD32 MkII

Electrocompaniet brand compatible Blu-ray player:
EMP3

Then follow the steps here based on your player.

https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/28569-sacd-ripping-using-an-oppo-or-pioneer-yes-its-true/

I make backup copies of all my SACDs and put them on a USB drive that I can plug to my OPPO and read directly.
Only drawback is that the OPPO will insert a gap (red book-compliant) between tracks even we you are playing contiguous tracks.
It's the "gapless" DSD replay function that has been long requested by OPPO player owners.

If I'm lazy I just play them from my laptop over wifi (I know it gets resampled down in that case) over uPnP from foobar2000 w/ the SACD plugin to my OPPO.

Thanks for posting all that. I knew about the PS3/certain Blu Ray players options but just curious as to what you used.

Surprised you go the modern wifi streaming route after going to the trouble to rip. Why not hardwire that stuff?

I think I'll just keep playing my small SACD collection with my SACD player.

As I said, it's only when I'm lazy or just to play in the background when I have guests and the quality is not an issue.

Otherwise, by order of preference:

1/ Play the SACD (as in the physical disc): no gaps on live music, multi-channel available
2/ Play the SACD rip on a drive via USB: gaps on live music, multi-channel still available
3/ Play the down-sampled audio via uPnp for convenience. I can drag'n'drop a few hours of music ahead, no need to keep swapping discs or choosing the next album folder to play, but no multi-channel.

Quality should always be an issue. Then again I never have guests. But if I did, I'd want to show off the best my gear could produce.

Then again that's maybe why I have no friends/guests? I care too much. In my own way.
