Post subject:  New SACD titles barely available from Amazon.com anymore?

Hello SACD listeners!

I have been buying SACDs from Amazon for years but recently all the new titles just aren't listed anymore.

Only this one made it and it's unavailable right now:

I Robot - Alan Parsons Project

All other titles I'm interested in are just not listed at all, example:

  • Otis Redding - Otis Redding Sings Soul
  • Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun
  • Jimi Hendrix - People, Hell and Angels
  • Dire Straits - Making Movies
  • Dire Straits - Communique
  • Dire Straits - Dire Straits

I can find them on less popular resellers' websites but... they don't ship to Singapore :-/

Did Amazon give up on SACDs?

It would appear so unfortunately.

That sucks

In the end I solved the problem by moving all my SACD business to elusivedisc.com.

Not only do they have a bigger SACD inventory, they're also less expensive than Amazon.

Ex:

The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot Amazon = US$41.53 (it's constantly going up)
The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot Elusive Disc = US$29.99 and they usually have 15% or 20% discount codes

They also stock all the other SACD publishers.

Even Amazon Japan isn't listing recent SACD releases. And now ECM got in exclusive agreement called TOWER RECORDS/UNIVERSAL ECM SA-CD SELECTION to remaster/release some of its 70's catalog in Japan only through Tower/Yahoo:

Sure do. After ordering, Elusive's Angela Clymer from the order department has been very helpful to split shipments and apply discounts.

So far, no issue. Good packing as well!

I don’t really follow these threads or the state of SACD but it seems like it’s dying off from these posts I read.

I thought I’d mention Acoustic Sounds in the US who sells lots of SACDs and makes their own and seemed to be saying they were making more not less when they sent me a catalog not too long ago.

Those guys.

It seems that they have a bit of the same problem as vinyl pressing these days: not enough production to meet demand.

I believe there are only 2 factories manufacturing SACDs these days: one in Germany (Sonopress?), one in Japan (SONY).

They raised the price for manufacturing SACDs in Japan last year, switching to SHM-SACD only often without red book layer (non-hybrid).

Hendrix's Axis - Bold as Love got released on time but the "Are You Experienced" got delayed several times.

The Dire Straits also have to make it to MFSL release...

The competition was briefly "Hi-Res Audio BluRay" (audio only discs) and now one can simply purchase/download the DSD/DSF files online and play with through a DSD-capable DAC.

I've ripped all my SACDs and just play them from a HDD connected via USB to my OPPO player.

Yeah, I’ve been downloading high res stuff in DSD or FLAC or sometimes even ALAC. Actual SACDs are just to much of a hassle to get.

Looks like the ECM releases in Japan are over.

They are now releasing VERVE and COLTRANE series:

SA-CD SUPREME SELECTION - VERVE

JOHN COLTRANE - IMPULSE

Most have been released before either in SACD or BD Audio, it's not as exciting as the ECM ones.

The next step definitely seems to be along the lines of object based placement audio, stuff like Dolby Atmos and Dolby 360⁰ and so on.

There's loads of it coming out on Tidal, I've not seen any physical Atmos or 360⁰ physical audio media yet but I would imagine it's not far off?

I've been listening to loads of it recently (you need eligble devices to enable it in Tidal). Some of the Atmos stuff sounds absolutely incredible.

Reginald Dwight - Rocketman
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
Rush - Tom Sawyer
The Commodores - Brick House
Diplo - MMXX-IX
The Weekend - Too Late
James Brown - Super Bad Parts 1, 2 and 3 (Mono Version)
Montell Jordan - This Is How We Do It (a different mix to the famous Slick Rick sampled version)
Guns n Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
Rush -Limelight
Sheku Kannah Mason - Scarborough Fair
Yello - Waba Duba
Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique, Op 14-1. Rêveries. Passions (Largo Allegro ed apassionato assai)

Just a handful of examples. The way they've been presented with the whole Atmos dimensional/object based thing just makes the music sound pretty much brand new. It's seriously impressive imho.

360⁰ doesn't seem anywhere near as impressive imho. With 360⁰ if it's something brand new and made specifically for the 360⁰ format, then it really does sound impressive. Live albums sound alright too for the most part. However when older music is given the same treatment I think it sounds bloody awful.

With older music it feels like all they have done is separate every track on the board, add a bunch of reverb and call it a day. It just sounds so obvious and poorly done. Atmos music blitzes 360⁰ every time.

Give it a try if you can, it really does bring things up a level.

This is all I could find on Atmos audio discs by the way. Has anyone seen more? (Sorry to derail the thread).
