How does the 3090 fit into the scheme of things? Were these (CLD-30x0) models on the high or low end of the market back then?

The Pioneer CLD-3090 would be considered on the high end of Pioneer's non-Elite models for 1991. The hierarchy for the line-up of players would work out like this....

Pioneer CLD-990 - single side player w/ barebone features, lighter weight, and one set of AV outputs
Pioneer CLD-1090 - still single side but adds shuttle dial to both the player & remote + added features and has two sets of AV outputs + S-Video output + optical output.
Pioneer CLD-M90 - basically a CLD-1090 with a five disc CD changer built in but lacks a shuttle dial, S-Video output, & optical output.
Pioneer CLD-2090 - all the same features of 1090 but is auto reverse (both side play) and possibly slightly better picture S/N ratio.
Pioneer CLD-3090 - all the same features of 2090 but adds the expensive digital field memory buffer to achieve special effects playback of CLV discs (that's why it sports a nicer jog/shuttle dial control). Also, an improved picture S/N ratio over the 2090.

In respect to general info on the 90 series and the 1991 model year, these players essentially have a number of firsts. They had the first 1bit D/A Converter for digital audio which in the end was considered inferior to the previous year's multi-bit DAC on the 80 series. It's still decent sounding for watching movies but the multi-bit DAC's were better especially for music (as well as movies). You can remedy this by connecting the optical output of the player to an AV Receiver that would likely have a better DAC (still keep analog L/R outputs connected for analog only discs as well as commentary tracks). Also, for the auto reverse mechanism of the 2090/3090, it is the first year of Pioneer’s 2nd generation Alpha Turn mechanism. It's a tad less robust than the previous generation but slightly faster. In any case, they work fine so long as the players aren't knocked around hard like if shipped. Lastly, they do jam up on side changes more as the loading belt stretches so just be aware that you'll have a belt change to do at some point (Addendum >>> I guess you already know about the belt change per your Intro posting).

One last thing. There might be a slight issue of the 3090 having some lock up issues on a few Image Entertainment titles due to something Pioneer was trying to do w/ something I can't remember now. I think the CAV edition of Fantasia could be affected but still not sure. Overall, it is a very minor issue that only affected a handful of titles for probably '90 - '91.
