WOW what an amazing player this is.
i really can't believe this reference Laservision player.
singled sided player, will do trick play on both CAV and CLV discs.

the playback video quality on this player is AMAZING.
made some older Japanese pressings look great, removed a lot of noise in some areas.

super quite player that is a real tank.
really can't believe that others don't talk about this amazing player.

i'm going to post pictures in a few days of the player and images etc.
just blown away by the quality of this one, very underated.

thanks to Duncan-LDservice and Duane-Grasshopper for talking about the player.
if they didn't tell me about it i would have never even thought about picking up a single sided player.

this will be in my main system now, i'll watch all my films on it and pickup a nice double sided player for guests
who come over to watch films.

I shouldn't have read your post since its making me more impatient of wishing I had my LDS2 I ordered from Duncan. I still haven't heard anything but he seems to have computer trouble. Also wished I get my Lexicon LDD-1 back from him so I hear AC-3 movies...
How do you have it hooked up in your system? I was thinking of connecting it to my JVC DVHS VCR like my 79 but I then think I should directly connect to one of the inputs on the TV and use my VE disc and calibrate the input.

i have all my players either LD or DVD pluged directly into TV or Projector so i can get the pure signal.

the R7G and this are both amazing players.
i've had about 10 different players over the years and those 2 are tops by far. i've never had the S2 so i can't say anything about it.
grasshopper has told me amazing things about it as well.
but i no longer own an R7G

I'll post a review up when I get the LDS2. I hope it will be just as amazing as the LDS1.

I might look into better cables but nothing too fancy since a lot of the pricer ones are nothing but snake oil.

OK here are some pictures, really bad but its the real deal
only thing that i have to get used to is the power, you can't turn the unit on with the remote.
in a way i personally like that better so you can remember to turn it on or off and not just sit on the remote
on the CRT it has a really nice film like image that i've never experenced before, the R7G gave me great
film like images also.

i love how the door drops open and the tray comes out, on the front of the tray there is more writing
they really went to town with this one, very classy high end unit.

watched about 3 discs so far today.
in the case of white smear i will say that this and the R7G are some of the best players i've ever seen.
no white smear at all, unless the disc is mastered poorly, then you will see a poor disc and no player will ever remove something
that is a mastering flaw.....

i'm sure there are more but considering this is such an old player with only composite its amazing

i've been lusting after an S1 for years now myself. REFERENCE/ELITE TOTL, 1986 model in Japan, '87 for the U.S. about $2000.00 MSRP USD.

this beauty almost ties with the 3030 as my favorite LDP of them all, in fact, however the 3030 does indeed edge it out ever so slightly though
in terms of 80's video gear design "sexiness" IMO, YMMV. all the same, i sure wish i could find one of these puppies for myself one of these odd days...

I always kind of wanted one of these, just a really classy player imo. Too bad they can be hard to find.

WOW, duncan told me that he had some paper saying that this played rotted discs well, that is true.

it has light rot, about 1 on the scale of 1-10. it shows when i tested it using the CLD-D503 and the Panasonic LX-900
but NO sign of rot when play back on the LD-S1, NONE!!!!!!!!!

i don't think i own any heavy rotted discs so i may have to buy one and test this out now to see how much better it removes
the rot.

Humm... this player was made around the same time as the CLD-1010. Could it also have a red laser?

waiting for a cable to come in the mail today to get some pictures.
the still step is not the best, has some jagged lines on CLV discs but the playback is amazing.

others will know more about the laser i tried to look it up but can't find much info.
i sort of feel i shouldn't post about the player as now it will go up in value by the Lasersharks

Look it up as the LD-s1 stands on its own like the Ld-s2 2 Reference Players to play one format, which is LD!!!!

The LD-S1 was Pioneers first Elite model in the US and like the LD-S2 and HLD-X0 was a player built as a no holes barred player just to test the limits of the format. It was also the first player to have CLV digital FX. The LD-W1 has the same video circuitry as the S1, it's just not in the Elite line although Pioneer offered it in a white version for their industrial division.

The S1 has a computer port for Pioneer's LD-ROM add on box. Its laser is the modern diode infrared type but then entire pickup was a new design with tighter focus - it was The Perfect Vision's reference player for many years. Some reviewers didn't like the video noise reduction, which is nondefeatable; Marc Wielage stopped using his S1 and went back to the CLD-909 due to the artifacts of the analog video NR. although the player offers a sharpness knob, it just rolls off the high frequency luma information and really should be set for flattest response and forgotten about.. The S1 was also Pioneers first player to have high quality 4x oversampling dual D/A converters - their two prior players, the first 900 and the 909 had harsh, brittle digital sound with a flat soundstage - Pioneer just didn't bother to engineer high quality digital sound circuits until the S1.

The player is capable of about 410 horizontal lines with a video S/N of about 48db.

Its a beautiful player and a true landmark player - I'm looking for one for my website. If interested I will scan the info The Perfect Vision wrote about it and also an excerpt of Marc Wielage's review of the CLD-91 where he mentions his dislike of the player.

Disclord, how would you compare it to the LD-W1? I ask because I have one of those and I'm not overly in love with the video. It's great on SD CRT but not so great on my 1080i Sony CRT.

as for the LDS1, it is a stand alone player, no parts are from any other players, and none are interchangeable.

and lets face it, all LD players made for standard definition TVs will look best on those
some can look better on newer TVs but they weren’t made for that.
