Hello all.

Been reading the posts here about the ADV7800/7842 eval board and I can't really find an answer to a couple of questions:

1. Is it only for capture or can you watch LDs on the fly?
2. Do you HAVE to connect it to a PC for it to work or is that only for adjusting the settings?

Thanx

It is not a consumer product. It is as the name suggest an evaluation board for OEMs to test the ADV7800 chipset and figure out how to implement to their final product. You do need the appropriate licenses in order to get one of these. There was a short period AD didn’t ask the licensing information and a bunch of people managed to order a small number of these.

1- Yes you can use it in real time. Although it can output 1080p, deinterlacing and scaling isn’t its primary functions so the results are very poor. You can get a healthy 480i signal out.

2- Yes you do need a computer to run it. Some have made custom RaspberryPie code to run it without a computer.

Some other remarks: You do need some programming background because there is no GUI. You adjust everything in code. There are some pre written codes floating around.

Thank your sir. ;)

I currently have a Radiance XE for scaling (and a Crystalio II on loan that I'm trying out). I have programming background in several languages (might need to knock some rust off LOL). However, having to hook it up to a PC is a deal-breaker for me.

Mine's still just hooked up to the laptop via usb. Like the ability for dialling in some things per disc.

Raspberry pie sounds delicious.

Yeah that's just everything hot glued into a hollowed out Faroudja processor, not complicated in the least.

Very simple but looks cool in the rack -

Would you mind sharing how much you spent on the components (minus the ADV).

I can get a refurbished, SFF HP for under $50 at work. It would greatly simplify things, I think.

Probably $75 on parts plus the $200 for the eval (I bought retail).

I use mine with a Bluetooth serial adapter and an android tablet. The tablet is connected to my logitech harmony hub as a keyboard. I use Tasker to trigger the Bluetooth serial apps macro function. Works great.

Wow. Is Tasker still around???? :)

I'm having a bit of a hard time wrapping my head around that set up. But controlling from your tablet (?) sounds pretty cool.

Android tablet runs Harmony app.

I hit watch a laserdisc in harmony. Hub turns everything on and connects to tablet as a keyboard and sends a keystroke to the tablet. Tasker is constantly looking for that keystroke, when it sees it it opens Bluetooth serial app and runs a macro that has the script to setup the eval board.

A friend sent me a new script and I was able to try it out near instantly.

The "P" version contains no HDCP keys and can be ordered by anyone*. The non-"P" version can only be ordered by HDCP licensees.

*As noted - the definition of anyone has become way more restrictive. I work at a company that sells HDMI/HDCP silicon IP blocks, so I’m good - others not so much

Using the eval board with an old Raspberry Pi I’d rather use for more demanding things got old. I started tinkering with a NodeMCU board based on the ESP8266 instead.

I got the inspiration from how people were able to hack the budget GBS-8200 arcade scaler. The GBS Control by Rama has a really nice web GUI so the plan is to tinker with that and build a web GUI for the eval board. Fingers crossed, it’s not goding to be fast, but let’s see how it ends up…
