You can update it using the USB port, doesn't have to be over ethernet

edit: ignore that comment - 773 doesn't have usb!!! Must be getting it muddled up with something else!

I finally bought one of these. For my particular setup, it has made a substantial improvement in picture quality.

Does anyone know the difference between VP-773, VP-773A, and VP-773AMP? I know the VP-773 does not have speaker outputs, just balanced line out.

Better compared would you say - to using the old cheap Panasonic DVD Recorder idea ?

I was able to get a better picture without a Panasonic DVD Recorder, so I ran direct composite. There are a lot of variables in play, but at the very least the VP-773 offers substantially more settings, and in my case better picture quality.

Thankyou C++ a straightforward appraisal !

I am going to be able to try out an Extron dsc301 shortly (just lucked on a working unit for only 35$) after its delivered.

Will be on the lookout for a 773 to come by my way but for a steal if possible - will give it a whirl - especially keen if the Extron shows any improvement for me.

Is anyone else bothered by the fan noise? I have the 773 non-amp model. Has anyone disconnected it?

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Kramer VP-730?
It's Inexpensive on ebay. Or, should I save up for the 773?

Are you finding the the JVC DVD Recorder now not so great with your Samsung TV?...is it still better than the Panasonic DMR-ES15 in your opinion?

The 770 at a glance looks to have similar functions/features to the 773 - idk if they are the same under the hood!
Are they really that much cheaper than the 773.

The JVC is doing a really good job.
I think I'm just letting my OCD run wild.
If the Kramer can improve the picture quality, the I would probably spring for it.
I'm new to this so it's been a lot of fun doing all the research and trying to figure it all out.
It looks like the Lumagen is grand prize if you can find one at a decent price.

Yes similar here...Ive tried a lower end Kramer, DVDO Iscan Ultra and Extron DSC301...the Extron for me was best out of the 3...even then the Panasonic DMR-ES15 was hard to beat.

I couldn't resist. I just bought a kramer vp-730 on ebay.
It should be delivered in a few days.
I'll update once I have it set up and let you know how it does.
Fingers crossed.
FYI:
I did have an email conversation with someone at Kramer Electronics. They said the only difference between the vp-730 & vp-773 is the numbers and types of inputs and outputs.

Quick Update:
The Kramer VP-730 arrived yesterday.
It was very easy to hook up and get it up and running.
First impression is that there is a very noticeable improvement in color and clarity.
It didn't come with a remote, but I was able to easily access the remote functions through my universal remote.
I'm using a logitec Harmony remote - very surprised that it had no problem connecting at all.
There are a few things in my set up I want to play around with and I have a lot to learn about the settings, etc.
It cost me around $60.00 on ebay + shipping.
So far it was worth every penny.

1st set up question:
What is the recommended picture resolution setting?

Kramer is brutal at scaling so ideally you would want to output 480i/p and let something better do the scaling, here are upscaling test pattern for Kramer vs Onkyo vs MadVR -

The VP-730 does not have a 3D comb filter. Its a pretty big difference.

I have noticed some Kramer scalers also have TBC time base correction improving picture quality.
This feature was only standard on editing video decks and more expensive S-VHS players.
How much would TBC improve picture quality playing laserdiscs would this feature add more pic. stability?
Crystalio and Lumagen never had TBC on their scalers.

Is their 3D comb filter good on all their 7 series scalers?

Wonder why Kramer skimped on RCA inputs?
They used to have plenty of analogue connections and S-video on older scalers, the new 773 only has one composite the rest is HDMI.
Very cheap of them not to include more analogue inputs.

The VPS-3800 video inputs are clocked by a 1ppm TXCO which I'm guessing is more stable than a TBC. I'm not really sure.
Here is a snippet from the brochure:
Quote:
Video circuits and audio delay circuits are clocked by 1ppm high precision low jitter TCXOs (temperature compensated crystal oscillators) and produce the highest quality standard of video and audio output.

The Faroudja DVP series has a TBC. At least the 1010 does via the Fli2000S chip.

Also, you may want to investigate the ADC chip being used as they also employ TBC like functionality called ADLLT (Adaptive Digital Line Length Tracking).

Because it was like 2015 and no one else cares about composite video. No one cares about us dude. We don't give them any economic reason to.

Manufacturers designing scalers still must make them multi versatile with different jacks.
People still own obsolete electronics how to connect them when manufacturers don't add those important inputs.
Really bad!

How many memebers on this forum owns a Kramer from the 7 series?
Are you happy with your scaler and the performance it displays?

How is the Kramer setup in your system? I have found that it is pretty useless for anything besides comb filter so I have Kramer 480i -> DVDO VP50 (deinterlacing) 480p -> Oppo BDP-103D (upscales to 1080p as my capture card doesn't like 480p) -> MadVR (aspect ratio control / upscale from 1080p to 4096 x 2160 for my projector).

Hello there. I Just felt in the Laserdisc world few weeks ago ;-)
I'm a bit of newbie with the video signal process so please forgive my ignorance.
I bought few days ago a VP-773, got pretty decent results with the comb filter, compared with the one of my 4k SonyTV, but I'm really curious about your setup, you seem to know your stuff so I am probably missing something... Let me explain :
You output in 480i from the Kramer to be deinterlaced with another unit, why do do that ? Because, If I am not wrong, there is now way to turn off the deinterlacing process in the VP-773, which means that you deinterlace then reinterlace inside the VP-773 to output in 480i, and then you deinterlace again in your DVDO... Why to not output directly in 480p from the VP-773 ?
What are your settings in the VP-773 ? Mine is :
# Deinterlace
- mode : Motion adaptive
- sync : older field
# Noise Filter :
- mosquito NR : 0
- combing NR : 0
- temporal NR : 3
- Block NR : 0
And I am also wondering, what about the filter, which unit in your chain is enhancing the signal ?
It would be really appreciated if you could enlighten me :-)

Hi!

Does someone know if it is possible to mask out subtitles that's in the black bars with the Kramer VP-733.
I have a RetroTink 5x and by using the crop function I can mask out the subtitles but I'm thinking of replacing it with a Kramer.

Maybe it's somehow defective/broken but a failure in my system.

When I want NR (Mosquito in front of Lumagen) I'll totally still go with the eval board over this disappointment.

So I'm totally going to eat my words.

Pulled it back out for a tinker and seems the issue was 'Film Mode' in the deinterlacing settings was set to off, mucking that up where 3:2 pulldown was required. It just doesn't look like deinmterlacing error as I'm familiar with it after feeding out at 480i and running through a separate processor/scaler.
