I have since many years owned the XS-3D scaler.
It's been working pretty well for me although people on this forum beat on it.

I believe it depends on what kind of gear you use for your setup?
Weakest link in the chain could spoil everything.
Using high-end video cables and a good quality tv is important to get a nice PQ from your laserdics.

Honestly I can't complain abot the XS-3D beacuse it works very well with my CLD-R7G.
I use the S-Video OUT to my XS-3D.
PQ is crispy and sharp, colors are nice.

My other player which is a DVL-909 displays a softer PQ.
I use the Composite Video OUT to my XS-3D
PQ is still good through the XS-3D.

I don't have much knowledge about scalers.
The Lumagen is my first purchase when I bought a new LCD tv.
My full-HD tv is the only brand which still has the S-video in the scart socket and multi standard PAL - SECAM - NTSC which is perfect for me and my stuff.
Can't be happier as it's nowadays very difficult to find the specific electronics with special options which I really want to buy.
It's all about compromise and to be happy with it.

My question about my scaler XS-3D.
I know it only has a 2D comb filter, when I enter menu settings, it displays 2D/3D when I increase or lower combing feature.
This is a bit confusing why Lumagen in the menu display it as a 2D/3D when it's only a basic 2D comb filter?

Next question?
Settings for comb filter?
Should I keep the combing level low or high or somewhere n the middle
Can't remember if combing level was: min. 0 - max. 10 ???

Next question?
The 2D comb filter on XS-3D is it a 3-line or a 5-line comb filter?

I only run my XS-3D on factory settings, I have never dealt with tweaking as I don't have the time nor do I have the essential video discs to adjust all the parameters for a perfect PQ.
The XS-3D is still enjoyable watching LD's on factory settings.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now the Q's for Kramer scalers.

I found out they use the ADV7842 - 3D comb filter chip on models from - to: 770 - 771 - 773 - 774
These are the last units having CV composite video, newer scalers has no analogue inputs.

I red in the below link from PBiancardi that Kramer is inferior for deinterlacing and upscaling but had the great ADV7842 3D comb filter for PQ.
Would Kramer be a disappointing purchase as it's more for presentation and not made for home A/V entertainment?

Next Q?
The ADV7842 and ADV7844 are identical with the exception of two additional HDMI inputs.
This is the only thing that differs between both comb filters?

Next Q?
I red about the 770 series, it seems it doesn't have the multi standard system for PAL - SECAM - NTSC?
Isn't that odd?

Do these scalers Lumagen and Kramer have an auto calibration for all the parameters if I don't want to sit for hours and tweak the crap out of it?
It's difficult to tweak without the Video essential disc.

Next Q?
The cut off picture on top of the screen.
This problem was it ever solved on all Lumagen scalers and the Kramer scalers?
This is what I found in another thread.
Issue is the fault of the company utilizing the chips (registers need to be corrected).

Eval Board - a member has already fixed this issue
Lumagen - theoretically they can fix the issue if they are willing to
Kramer - theoretically they can fix the issue if they are willing to

Info about cut-off PQ can be found here.
Onkyo AVR's with ADV7844

I'm looking into buying a 2nd hand Kramer to compare with the XS-3D.
I appreciate you input, wanna learn some more about scalers.

Thanks

I apologise in advance for being unable to help with your original question. I just wanted to express my disappointment that this thread wasn't titled Kramer vs Kramer. :(

OK, here's what I know from my own experience.

My Equipment:
Pioneer dvl-700
jvc vhs/dvd recorder
Lumagen Radiance xs-3D
denon s660H AVR
75 inch Samsung 4k

I just got the Lumagen from an online auction. I'm halfway through updating the firmware. So far the Lumagen is doing an amazing job (even without the 3d comb filter).
Before I got the Lumagen, I was using a Kramer vp730. It was ok, but not as good as the Lumagen.
I still have another days worth of firmware updating. Looking forward to seeing if the updates improve the picture even more. I have made some minor setting adjustments and haven't had time to
do any color calibration yet. But, to my untrained eye, it's looking pretty good.
I've got a question for you -
On the Lumagen xs 3d where in the menus are the comb filter options?

Hey bud.

Keep up the good work with info.
If I remember correct comb filter settings was either in the VIDEO or OTHER menu?
It was a few weeks I did some tweaking so I don't remember exactly.

I've learned to like my setup. it's important that you use HQ video cables to gain the best possible picture quality

It should only take 3-5 minutes to update the firmware of the Lumagen. You can update the latest release immediately without doing incremental updates.

The XS 3d does not have a 3d comb filter and does not have any adjustments.

Kramer VP-460, and the 77x series scalers have 3d comb filter and should be set to output 480p.

I use a Kramer VP-460 in front of a Lumagen 2143. I set the Lumagen to re-interlace the output of the Kramer and have had fantastic results letting the Gennum chip in the Lumagen handle the de-interlacing.

I hope to be getting my Lumagen 2144 back from repair to do a head to head soon.

Been using my laserdisc player more freequently lately.
Yesterday I watched Glimmer man.

I re-checked my settings on my XS.
I use this on factory settings with minor tweaks as I haven't got the calibration disc.
It does a nice job on factory settings.
People complaining this is a poor scaler must have bought a lemon scaler?
Mine works perfect and I grew fond of it.

My english isn't the very best when I read the manual.

There are three features I don't know what they do ????
What does DITHER do?
It had multiple settings - 6 bit - 7 bit - 9 bit - 10 bit - AUTO - OFF
Which one of these should I enable for better picture?

The second feature is re-interlace ???????
I can set this feature to either AUTO - FILM - VIDEO
Which one should I enable ???

Third feature, Field flip - what does it do ???
Should I enable or disable this feature?

The other features I have set to:
DNR - Mosquito and Block I have them all set to 0 (zero)

Sharpness - all settings I have set to 3

Combing - I can set from 0 to 15
I have this set on 15 maximum combing

Gray scale top and bottom and vertical - I have them set to 9%

Contrast setting I have set to 6

Black level set to 3

white level set to 4

I haven't messed with colors and hue
I only run these on factory settings
