I have since many years owned the XS-3D scaler.
It's been working pretty well for me although people on this forum beat on it.
I believe it depends on what kind of gear you use for your setup?
Weakest link in the chain could spoil everything.
Using high-end video cables and a good quality tv is important to get a nice PQ from your laserdics.
Honestly I can't complain abot the XS-3D beacuse it works very well with my CLD-R7G.
I use the S-Video OUT to my XS-3D.
PQ is crispy and sharp, colors are nice.
My other player which is a DVL-909 displays a softer PQ.
I use the Composite Video OUT to my XS-3D
PQ is still good through the XS-3D.
I don't have much knowledge about scalers.
The Lumagen is my first purchase when I bought a new LCD tv.
My full-HD tv is the only brand which still has the S-video in the scart socket and multi standard PAL - SECAM - NTSC which is perfect for me and my stuff.
Can't be happier as it's nowadays very difficult to find the specific electronics with special options which I really want to buy.
It's all about compromise and to be happy with it.
My question about my scaler XS-3D.I know it only has a 2D comb filter, when I enter menu settings, it displays 2D/3D when I increase or lower combing feature.
This is a bit confusing why Lumagen in the menu display it as a 2D/3D when it's only a basic 2D comb filter?
Next question?Settings for comb filter?
Should I keep the combing level
low or
high or somewhere n the
middle Can't remember if combing level was: min. 0 - max. 10 ???
Next question?The 2D comb filter on XS-3D is it a 3-line or a 5-line comb filter?
I only run my XS-3D on factory settings, I have never dealt with tweaking as I don't have the time nor do I have the essential video discs to adjust all the parameters for a perfect PQ.
The XS-3D is still enjoyable watching LD's on factory settings.

Now the Q's for Kramer scalers.I found out they use the ADV7842 - 3D comb filter chip on models from - to: 770 - 771 - 773 - 774
These are the last units having CV composite video, newer scalers has no analogue inputs.
I red in the below link from PBiancardi that Kramer is
inferior for deinterlacing and upscaling but had the great ADV7842 3D comb filter for PQ.
Would Kramer be a disappointing purchase as it's more for presentation and not made for home A/V entertainment? Next Q?The ADV7842 and ADV7844 are identical with the exception of two additional HDMI inputs.
This is the only thing that differs between both comb filters?
Next Q?I red about the 770 series, it seems it doesn't have the multi standard system for PAL - SECAM - NTSC?
Isn't that odd?
Do these scalers Lumagen and Kramer have an auto calibration for all the parameters if I don't want to sit for hours and tweak the crap out of it?It's difficult to tweak without the Video essential disc.
Next Q?The cut off picture on top of the screen.
This problem was it ever solved on all Lumagen scalers and the Kramer scalers?
This is what I found in another thread.Issue is the fault of the company utilizing the chips (registers need to be corrected).
Eval Board - a member has already fixed this issue
Lumagen - theoretically they can fix the issue if they are willing to
Kramer - theoretically they can fix the issue if they are willing toInfo about cut-off PQ can be found here.
Onkyo AVR's with ADV7844I'm looking into buying a 2nd hand Kramer to compare with the XS-3D.
I appreciate you input, wanna learn some more about scalers.
Thanks
