I received my RT 4k a few weeks ago. I am running a MLD-7020 via S-video into the DB15 port using the laserbear adapter for the enhanced s-video feature. Laserdiscs have never looked this good. I am very interested in this thread and looking forward to sharing optimal settings in the RT 4k.

So far I have found Motion Adaptive algorithm, inverse Telecine on, dejudder on, MDA set to max. These all seemed to help the picture for me. What else should I be setting the profile to?

I just got my retrotink 4k, but you probably want to set IRE to 7.5. in the SDP decoder section. There are also some pre-made laserdisc profiles, but I haven't done much with them yet.

Just a short update from my side:

Did some testing with the RT4K and the results overall are very good!
Compared to my old setup the only downside is, that the "Noise Reduction" feature of my TV does not improve the signal anymore. This is a bit of a bummer as the picture has a bit more grain now (not a big deal but worth mentioning).

Besides of that: Wow. The picture is way more clear and feels very natural. The 3D comb filter is a huge benefit.
Adding HDR effects is no option as the picture looks super artifical (as to be expected) so this might come in handy when plugging in the good old NES + Scanlines once in a while.
Regarding the profile I created for myself, I did use the instructions from the above posted video to set everything up.

Additional benefits: As the RT4K does have inputs both for analog and toslink audio I can just connect my player directly to it and finally am able to switch between analog and digital with my LDs remote.
Before that I had to tinker with my AV reciever every time, as you had to "brute force" disable some inputs as it always prioritizes HDMI -> Optical -> Analog.
The ability to create individual profiles for Pal/NTSC, Pan & Scan and all other aspect ratios makes it very handy to be able to play a movie just with one press on the RT4K remote (profiles can be linked to the number pad on the remote). This for me is a huge plus.

Cheers,
Markus

Holy crap, it’s $750? Will not attend!

I’m sure it’s great but a…that’s about $50 less than my newest Sony 4K TV on which LD already looks amazing out of the box.

EDIT: For example: https://electronics.sony.com/tv-video/t ... p/kd65x85k

That’s not my exact display but it will do. Some of the most recent Sonys lack composite in, sadly.

Glad it is working that way for you!
If it was „only“ for LD I would have hesitated a lot more, but as I am using some of my remaining old console stuff from time to time it was worth it for me.

Okay wow so Sony as well is now getting rid of the composite in?
If I remember correctly they were literally the last ones to support it (with adequate hardware behind it to make good use of the signal that is). :(

Some of the new ones support composite but NOT component, which is a new development. On mine I have to plug an adaptor into a 1/8 TRS to get component and to use composite I need to plug into…the green one I think. They very much do not advertise the SD features, in fact they physically conceal them to the point where many users don’t realize they have it.

!!! Really? Are you sure that carries component properly? What device are you sending component video from?

I'll stick to my DVDO-VP50 for now. It doesn't f with video signals much, just lets you automatically switch sources and scale nicely and since I have a late Sony CRT that's all I need for a natural picture, the way it was meant to look but compromising nothing.

Yeah it does. That kind of adapter is actually pretty common on more modern TVs in Europe as well.

There was a batch of 50 units available at Dragonbox in Germany so got one of my side of the pond. They sold out in 20 minutes or less. Would have liked to avoid VAT on that thing during a trip to the US, but no constant availability/predictable immediate shipping yet. Anyhow, looking forward to see how my LDs will look, plus do some serious retro gaming!

Good choice! You will not be disappointed.
I got a mail from them as well. The price is about 150€ cheaper than importing yourself (at least for me in Germany).
The latest experimental firmware got a few interesting updates regarding Gen-Lock.
Maybe one day the RT4k might be able to play synchronised subtitle files.
Although I am sure this is a very low priority topic.

Hello,
I just found out about retrotink and I'm very intrigued.

1. I'm wondering if anyone can compare the 4k or 5x to the Lumagen Radiance 2021?
2. Which is best for laserdisc, 4k or 5x?

Thank you!
d.

Hey David,

I have never seen / used a Lumagen, but question 2 is very easy.
Apart from many other reasons / features for LD the most important one is:
The 5X got no comb filter, so for LD it will not be much more useful than any other simple converter.

The 5x does have a comb filter.

If your TV supports 4K, the tink4k will be the best option.

Are you sure? But a 2D one only I guess?

Edit:
The 5X only got a 2D, the 4K a 3D comb filter, which is a huge difference.
Besides of that it is way more complex than „if you have a 4K TV“.
There are a lot more interesting settings and options to fiddle around with the 4K.

My new set up:
Pioneer LD-S9 - Retrotink 4K - Denon AVR - TV

Yes, both independently which you can store as different profiles for each ratio if required/useful.

@David: Glad you are happy as well!

Pan only?
You definitively need some scaling.

I have the S9 as well. What settings are using on the retrotink? S-video or rca?
