I recently acquired a Panasonic DMR-EZ49V at a charity shop. I got it mainly for transferring VHS tapes to DVD. It also had an SVideo port on it and I had never tried the output from my DVL-919. I was surprised to find that it looked quite a bit sharper than my Kramer VP-773A. I also tried the composite port on the Panasonic and that looked sharper too. I'll post some images here as a comparison, but it seems that the Kramer is softening the image somewhat, maybe it's a setting I have on it?

Panasonic SVideo and Composite:

The Panasonic DMR-EZ49V is set to 1080p so is likely doing all the upscaling and deinterlacing. I have tried to read the service manual to figure out what chip it is using to do this but had no luck, I found it too confusing.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Maybe it's just that the upscaling that the onkyo uses is just not that good?

What are your NR settings under Enhance?

As far as I see it you should at least have posted the Scaling / Sharpening / Noise Reduction settings of the Onkyo as the Kramer ist outputting only 480p. Configured that way it cannot really be compared to your Panasonic DMR that does the job completely. A fair comparison would have been to scale with the Kramer and fiddle with it's sharpening settings.

It's been a while since I used this setup so my memory may be wrong. I am fairly certain I had the Onkyo setup for only upscale from 480p to 1080p and every setting like noise reduction and sharpness was set to zero. I think my conclusion on this was that the DMR looked sharper, but it almost over-sharpened the image. You could quite easily see ringing and artifacts, which I found distracting.

I eventually moved onto the MadVR PC that I posted about in a separate thread, I preferred it as it had way more options to tinker with. My current setup is a B&O Beovision 32, which I think has been my favourite way to experience Laserdisc. With the CRT TV I focus way less on trying to tinker with the settings and just enjoy the film. There's something nice about just putting in the disc, the TV sets the correct letter-boxing crop and just plays.

Bang and Olufsen were fantastic CRT tv's back in the days, really nice picture and sound quality.
For laserdisc these TV's are great to enjoy a movie
