Does anyone know what comb filter Samsung used in their last series of plasma TV's? All I could get from Samsung support is that it is a 3D comb filter, they couldn't give me a make or model.

Quick Google finds some technical docs but none listing the comb filter chip.

Considering that comb filters are discussed quite frequently here and that there are many fans of plasma display technology for laserdisc playback lddb seems like a great forum to ask this question.

I actually agree with you on that as I am always trying to find what are the best modern day displays with good comb filters.

However, what I have been finding (like yourself) is very sparse details about this and a lot of emphasis on what everyone’s displays will do for the current HD and 4K sources. Thus, what that tells me is that most companies just aren’t focused on the past (because that’s what comb filters are about) and aren’t going to try and make a big splash on what their TV’s will do with insignificant low def sources.

Still, I wouldn’t just focus on comb filters as there is more to that when it comes to digital TV’s. We’re talking about how a TV converts that low def signal and tries to process it into a digital representation of an analog picture and I see more issues of poor processing adding terrible artifacts that are more distracting than poor comb filtering.

So in the end, I have no answer for you except test the TV (if possible, I assume you might be buying used on-line) with an analog source to see if you like the picture it produces or not. Since it is an older model plasma, good chance they are still optimized to look good on analog sources.

I know the CLD-R7G has the best comb filter offered in a LD player. What I'm trying to find out is if it's comb filter is so good that it is better than what is offered in Samsung's flagship plasma from 2013?

I actually like the results from the S-video output on my Faroudja LD-1000 when connected to my older Toshiba flat panel. Unfortunately the Samsung doesn't have an S-video input.

What I can do is run the S-video into my Integra preamp which will output the signal over component which the Samsung TV will then accept.

From a former R7G owner, my guess would be that it would likely better the Samsungs onboard filter or at the very minimum be the equal to it, as there’s arguably little to choose between the R7Gs filter versus that of the Lumagen Radiance 2144.

But we have to remember the filters on the LD players are made for the analog format and these aren't, don't know much of what would make what better
as I don't know as much about the tech data.

That’s a fair point, although (and I’m happy to be corrected) surely any incoming signal to the TV composite input would be assumed to be coming from an analog source so surely the sets onboard comb filter will be designed with this in mind?

Oh yeah, thats true, but again I don't know as much about this stuff was just sort or type thinking

I do know that Zeta has a newer TV than I do and I have read his posts saying that he gets a good LD image so its possible
and I really think that people buying new TVs need to get a good return policy so they can test it with LDs at home and if its good great, if not then return
and try another is how I feel.

Yep, I think the zeta has to be the main man for this one, he’s runs a Sony OLED dosen’t he? I’m lead to believe they possess superior comb filters to what most Samsung models do and as far as I’m concerned my LD players are hooked up full time to my ht projector via the Lumagen having never considered bringing one into the house to try out with the Panasonic 40” LED used for general TV viewing, therefore unable to comment about the quality on that one.

Thanks for all the feedback. If I were to use the S-video output on my LD player to my preamp which will then output it over component into my TV, does the incoming component signal to my TV go through the TV's internal comb filter as well?

Comb filters are for splitting a composite video signal into separate light and color signals (like S-Video, Component video, and digital video (I'm ignoring the difference between YPbPr and RGB video here because it's not relevant)). Signals other than composite skip the comb filter because there's nothing for the filter to do.

Thank you for the explanation, that makes sense!
