Hello, I'm new to this, so bear with me. I bought a Pioneer DVL - 700. It's connected to my Denon AVR-s660h via a rca - hdmi converter. Then fed to my Samsung qn75qn90 TV. The picture quality is ok and after some minor picture adjustments on the Samsung it gets better. My question is should I invest in a DVD recorder for some added upscaling? Will my novice eyes notice a picture quality difference? Like I said, this is all new to me. Any helpful hints will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! David |

If the composite to HDMI adaptor you’re using is no-name then it will absolutely be inferior to passing the signal through a quality DVD recorder. |

Hello! Just a quick update on the dvd recorder situation. I stopped by the thrift shop today and found a Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder. $40.00 with remote! It doesn't have a hdmi output (not sure if that would make a difference). Running it through a rca to hdmi converter to the avr to the samsung flat screen right now. Set up was super easy. Picture has improved 150% percent. I'm sure there are a few more adjustments to make, but I'm thrilled with progress I've made so far. D.

Ensure your RCA cables are of a decent standard, 75ohm with shielding etc and less important your HDMi cable is not some $1NZD job. Easy simple way to squeeze abit more of the picture. |

A decent minimal standard, yes. Your composite cable should be at least as good as the free one Pioneer gave you. Beyond that though I’d save the money for a better broken DVD recorder, a JVC with HDMI out. The one I have will make a LDV2200 look like a CLD-99…to the untrained eye, anyway. It really is that transformative. |

Looks like a nice unit, i have no experience with but surely may see an improvement. I can whole heartly recommend a DVDO Iscan would be worth a search indeed since your in Emerica, Has alot of adjustments to clean up image and you can also get aspect ratios etc nice and tidy on modern displays. Depends how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go really, for example user pbiancarbi uses MADVR with projectors, anamorphic lens etc to really push rhe boundaries on what Laserdisc can look like to your eyeballs. Good filter? ThAnk you! I think that’s the one I have, I’ll have to check. If it is I recommend it highly. I’ve looked it up before and posted it here before but I can’t find squat in a search. If you’re better maybe you can. If you can get a deal on one because the VCR or DVD sections are broke, do it. They are just going to break anyway and you only want the pass-through. I watched maybe 50 VHS tapes on mine before it started to refuse to load them. The DVD side still works, I think. EDIT: I found my old post and according to it mine is the JVC DR-MV150B. |

UPDATE! The JVC MV150 dvd recorder arrived today. I hooked it up and the difference is incredible! I'm not sure if the improvement in picture quality is due to the hdmi output from the JVC, the JVC's filter or a mixture of both. Anyway, I'm thrilled and so happy that it worked out perfectly. This unit applies DNR, color boosting, and overall stabilization, and of course puts out 480p over HDMI which is also great. When I say it will make a LDV2200 look like a CLD-99 I was only exaggerating slightly. It was mainly made to work with VHS and television so it’s a serious first aid sorta of device. It doesn’t have to work as hard to clean up LD.

The improvements in picture quality are across the board. Picture is sharper, no lines across the screen and the colors are more normal and do not get weird with movement. My setup: Pioneer DVL 700 - JVC mv150 - Denon AVR-S660H - Samsung qn75qn90A I believe the Denon does it's own upscaling too. The only issue I had during setup was that the audio from the Pioneer was not passing though the JVC. I had to run it directly to the Denon with RCA cables. Not a big deal. Still sounds great. |

Interesting and good to hear the JVC improved your picture over the Panasonic for your Samsung TV. |
