Post subject:  PAL Panasonic DVD Recorders still good for LD passthrough?

I've been tinkering with my LD setup and I think it's really time I got some sort of 3D comb filter to clean up the image a bit. I'm not as active here as I used to be but I remember a lot of discussion a few years back about the Panasonic DMR E20, ES10, ES15, ES20, and ES25 DVD recorders having a good 3D comb filter that does wonders for an LD signal.

Are these still good budget options for adding a 3D comb filter to your setup?

Over the last fews days I've been doing a bit of reading into them and despite these models being popular here I've seen nothing but complaints on other forums...though they are admittedly focusing on VHS preservation so their complaints may not be relevant to laserdisc. Complaints include issues with black levels (NTSC units), blown out whites (PAL units), and digital artefacts such as posterization being added to the picture.

To further complicate things I'm in PAL land and the vast majority of information about using these DVD Recorders is for the NTSC units. I've seen conflicting reports about the PAL units reducing the horizontal resolution on LD passthrough...but the posts were a bit confusing and could be read as either limiting the horizontal resolution for just PAL LDs or both PAL and NTSC. I only have a handful of PAL LDs with the vast majority of my collection being NTSC, so I could take the hit on PAL if NTSC is getting cleaned up nicely.

So does anyone here have experience using any of these PAL DVD Recorders and could help clear up any of my questions?

I think the ES10 would probably be the model I go for as it is the only one of the PAL models to have a full range of outputs; SCART, composite, and component.

Alternatively are there any other budget friendly options for a decent 3D comb filter these days?

I have an LG RC388 and despite the fact that it will play PAL and NTSC alike on both DVD and VHS, it refuses to take in NTSC signal, so that's probably another thing to look out for.

I have a Panasonic DMR-EX725 which will record and pass-through NTSC fine.
I never really gave a sh*t about its comb filter though because I also have a Crystallio 2.
On another (german) forum the Pioneer DVR-LX70D was supposedly the king of analog video,
it has a completely different input section than its smaller brother which seems to be often
overlooked as everyone is just assuming the only difference is the hard drive size.
Might be worth checking, unfortunately I never managed to grab one for a good price.

Yeah but is it for PAL or NTSC markets?

German or European market unit, can do PAL and NTSC, comes with satellite tuner (possibly other variations available).
From the sticker on the backside: 220~240V 46W 50Hz, Region 2.

Can you point me to the german forum about the Pioneer DVR-LX70D, please?

I did buy it a couple of years ago (very high price) and have done all my
comb filter tests using it to burn the DVD+RW

3D Y/C Comb Filter tests

the Pioneer DVR-LX70D Comb filter is also tested

Thanks
