LaserDisc Database :: View topic - Anyone have a Sony 32XBR100?

Never really looked into it as I searched for a KV-40XBR800. And I'm quite happy with that as far as LD display goes.

Sounds nice on paper. Problem is, since it's from 1998, and not from their WEGA line (as it has a rounded tube front)--thus not as sexy--I suspect most people probably just threw them out if they upgraded to HD.

The weight of the KV-40XBR800 is definitely its biggest drawback. That along with the rather deep footprint. But I was looking for a good middle ground display between LDs and blu-rays and this one fit the bill for me.

I just don't ever want to have to move that 300 lb monster again!

Well, the XS955 is anything but a compromise! That probably has the highest native resolution of any consumer CRT Television. That along with the built in ATSC tuner and I would say that's a better set by far than the KV-40XBR800, whereas the 40XBR800 only has screen size in its favor.

I merely went for the 40" because I found the better deal at the time. There was a craigslist seller selling an 36XS955 at the same time I was looking at the KV-40XBR800 that I bought. I was really torn at which to get, but the 40" was closer, $100 cheaper and of course, slightly bigger.

I always figured that if I wanted an ATSC tuner, I could buy one separately, but not really necessary since I get my HD content through FIOS cable.

Is that stand part of the TV or is it optional?

The Sony KV-32XBR100 is a 32 inch CRT tv that has the reputation as the greatest NTSC tv ever made. Anyone here have one? I imagine laserdiscs would look amazing on such a highly regarded CRT, as this set was made before HD and was therefore optimized for the NTSC video format. I missed one of these on my local craigslist and never heard back from the seller, and these sets were quite expensive new so are hard to find now. A studio monitor such as a Sony PVM-2950q could probably beat it in performance, and I'm also in search of one of these.

i remember growing up my father bought a 27 inch panasonic GAOO or 00 it was a great set, but it was old, back around 1991-92 always loved watching AKIRA on that screen

The 40XBR800 looks like an amazing CRT, and they are cheap now since everyone is brainwashed into having flat panels. I have been tempted by 40XBR800's on craigslist, but the weight is scary. I could imagine being crushed by this 40 inch glass monster! The 32XBR100 probably represents the final evolution of the round Trinitron tube and would be a cool piece to acquire.

wow, 165 that is pushing it. never had more than a 27 inch and they are always around 120ish that sony is a beast, i guess you would always have to hire someone to move it if you decide you don't like the corner of the room that you put it in.

The only problem I have with the KV sets is the lack of a digital ATSC tuner. So, my comprimise is the KD-36XS955. TLK

The higher resolution and ATSC digital tuner swayed the pendulum in its favor. TLK

Note the box beneath the 32XBR100 in the link: this box, which resembles the usual set top box, is actually a required part of the tv which serves as a breakout box for the AV inputs. This set originally cost around $3300, which also accounts for scarcity on craigslist - in addition to the doubtless losses caused by flat panel upgrade lemmings noted above.

I have a non XBR 32 inch Wega and it has a great picture; these flat tubes were the final evolution of the CRT and the 32XBR200 would be great for viewing LDs with. The 32XBR200 is a standard def NTSC set, without all of the processing of the HD XBRs, so it should give you a very pure analog experience with video off of your laserdiscs.

Yeah, I'm really tempted to get it, but the only place I could put it is if I replace the Sony WEGA 24" in my bedroom. And that barely fits as I have it on one of my bureaus!

Found a reprinting of a review of the set on Chicago Tribune's website. According to them, the set was completely made in America. He is out of his mind or whoever pays $400 for this tv. A brand new 4k sony led-lcd (43") sells for $799 retail, $700ish street price. He would have to pay a hundred bucks or so to get rid of it. I am sorry but some items are worth nothing when they are seriously outdated.

Yeah, I doubt it's going to sell at that price. He'll probably be haggled down to under $100 in about a month tho.

I had a PVM-2950q for quite a while and it was very impressive. It finally died on me and was deemed not repairable. The best part about it was the high resolution (for NTSC) super Trinitron tube. The 32XBR100 was the only consumer model ( so I've read) that had the super Trinitron tube. Also, the color accuracy was phenomenal. My favorite part though was the number and type of inputs. 3 s-video and an RGB or Component input (RGB on a non European set are you kidding me? )

Wow, too bad that 32XBR100 on CL is not closer to me (I'm way upstate in NY) as I would probably pay $100 or so for one (although, since it looks like any other old CRT to the average person at this point you could likely get one for free to almost free).
