rein-o wrote: is there some way you can just unplug the power to reset like a computer?? OR is the button on the remote stuck and it's still giving the signal. also what if the cable or whatever else you have hooked up is giving a signal of ON for the captions. what if you just unplug everythign then put it back??
i would just do the power and cable, let it sit for a minute and then try it again. I tried unplugging for a reset and it didn't work. The remote is fine, no problems there. I never thought to unplug all the cables because I don't think there is any caption connection that way. I could try it though. The main issue is the greyed out on/off setting on the display menu. I just don't understand it why that would happen.

I have the manual but it is not a help. The web site you posted doesn't give the "service menu " code which a repair guy would have to access. This is not related to the cable input because I don't believe that would shut down the ability to control the captions on the tv set menu. I went into "self test" mode by pressing the "action" and power button at the same time. It's supposed to give a self check and I guess it did but the problem remains. I discovered that component 1, component 2, and HDMI are greyed out and unaccessible but video 1 through 4 does not have the greyed out caption. Not that this helps me .

Pulling my hair out. it has to be some signal that cable is pumping and your TV is reacting to it. why not try removing all cable signal, put your DVD or LD into your TV with coaxal where you have your cable TV normally. if you still get the problems then somethign might be going bad? like a cap or something.

remington wrote: I SOLVED the captions issue (thanks to Rein-o's input). BUT with a catch. The captions don't display on screen but in the tv menu they are still greyed out. The cable box captions settings were on (even though it said off). Hit it a few times to correct. Somehow the cable box permenantly greyed the set captions out. I've never seen that. I don't care that the captions are greyed out because I DON'T PLAN ON USING THEM ON THIS SET AGAIN! Thanks. glad i could help anyway glad you figured it out, it sounded like something that you had to keep pressing, but what. and you found it.
