Are projectors any good with LDs ?
I was thinking of picking out a older high end one but IDK, any tips ? are they good ? bad? right now I'm using a viewsonic 24" led with a video possessor to covert component over to VGA.

I would stay away from "older" projectors as you may not be getting 1080p, poor contrast, etc., and regardless, scalers in projectors are not very good. Even 10 years ago, the really high end projectors that cost more than $10,000 had pretty horrible resolution, and generally were designed to work with separate scalers. You will most likely get a much better picture using a modern projector with a good separate scaler. Projectors have really improved in the past 5-10 years so a really high end projector that may have cost $10k 5 years ago will probably be inferior to a $1-2k projector today. I use an Epson 8700UB projector and use a Onkyo TX-SR875 receiver which has a very nice high end Reon scaler chip. Laserdiscs look great projected onto my 150" screen. what is the point of getting a high resolution projector given LD low resolution? I only plan to use it with my LDs
thanks for the info. Oh ya I waned to get a older one to save $$$, I don't want to spend much.
edit the video possessor I have does scaling. it's not the best at it, but it ok

Having a good scaler and projector will significantly improve the picture. This is like comparing a standard def DVD player with a high end upscaling DVD player. Vast difference in picture quality.

agree with everything invenio has to say. i have a SD infocus IN72 for my projector, i use an 80" screen, the largest i can have in my apartment. I think it gives a great picture, originally i bought this on sale for under 500.
SO if you get an older one are you saying a CRT, then there is a lot of adjustments to do and lots of setup. if you get an older DLP or LCD don't bother, just get a lower priced one that has a great review.
when i bought mine there were 2 or 3 in my price range that were high in reviews. so you will have to do a lot of research, or find a local place who sells and has projectors setup.
since i haven't bought a projector in about 6-7 years I would have to do all the research all over again. do some google, it's your friend, and talk to local stores to see what they say. i ended up buying mine at best buy. also make sure you get the correct screen for the projector you get.

Projector quality has progressed immensely in the past decade. As far as digitals go, yeah newer is definitely better. CRT projectors still have the edge over much more expensive digitals in areas such as being able to do true blacks, plus build quality and repairability (CRT PJs sold for tens of thousands to demanding users like the military and are thus built to last and be easily serviced, with modular construction in machines like the Barcos and Marquees). I also like the idea of these beasts being the ultimate analog display device, without any pixels or native resolution. CRT projection is not for everyone. A 9 inch CRT PJ is going to be a 200 pound behemoth, with fan noise and much more complex setup than a digital (such as doing convergence). The price on the highest end units has dropped enough that I am considering getting one: for example Curt Palme, the CRT PJ authority, has some Sony G90s that look very nice up on the bay at reasonable prices....very tempting!
