Post subject:  Internal Photos of Algolith Mosquito HDMI video enhancer.

I finally had the time to put together my home theater system. Before I placed all components inside the cabinet, I cleaned their internals, fans, heat sinks etc.. I had the opportunity to take pictures of Algolith Mosquito HDMI Analog/Digital video noise reducer internals.

Algolith Mosquito HDMI is an older product but it was way ahead of its time. Matter of fact in my opinion it still is the best noise reduction algorithm used in any consumer level product today and believe me I have compared it nearly all(HQV, QDEO, DVDO). Algolith is sold to Sensio which is also a Canadian firm but focused on pro equipment. They furthered enhanced Algolith's algorithm and now producing new units. Before Algolith was acquired by Sensio, HQV bought the noise reduction algorithm from Algolith. HQV had to alter the algorithm because HQV chips didn't have processing power and memory to accommodate complete power of Algolith Mosquito noise reduction algorithm.

Left side of the board. Some chips from Silicon Image here.

Right side of the board. Some Analog Devices chips. They are probably used for the analog component inputs in the back(total 3 in, 1 out).

Unit also has 4 HDMI (profile 1.2) inputs and 1 HDMI (Profile 1.2) output. It can convert analog components and output from its HDMI output. It does NOT perform any video processing(i.e. scaling, de-interlacing) beside noise reduction and detail enhancement. It can also can alter color and dark shadow cue detail similar to Darbee Darblet to give picture more 3D look but much primitive then found in Darblet today, and only has on/off(no adjustments)

Here two Algolith Mosquito HDMI units side by side. One goes with Crystalio II VPS-300 Pro and one goes with CII VPS-3300 I have. Together with Crystalio II, it is best video processing solution for Digital SD/HD cable, DVD, IPTV. In theory it can be used for Laserdisc in its DNR (dynamic noise reduction) mode.It applies Gaussian noise reduction to analog uncompressed video. It's mapping mode displays where noise reduction is applied in picture.

It is the same enclosure used for Algolith's complete video processor Dragonfly. Dragonfly used HQV for de-interlacing and scaling. It used the downscaled algorithm on the HQV chip instead of their own complete noise reduction algorithm. Algolith recommended Mosquito and Dragonfly units to be used together for ultimate results.

Algolith Mosquito HDMI offers multiple adjustments over picture in 15 increments each. 3D(for moving) noise reduction, 2D (for static) noise reduction. Detail enhancement( similar to what's found HQV, ABT, QDEO chips). It has 2 mode. MNR(mosquito noise reduction) for digital sources, DNR(dynamic noise reduction) for analog sources. It has contrast stretch on/off which is similar to Darbee Darblet's functions but it is much inferior. You can split screen. One side shows processed image the other side unprocessed. You can also turn on mapping and see where it applies noise reduction and where it leave picture alone. It is very smart indeed. If the picture is good, it leaves it alone. If there is some minor compression artifact in one corner of the picture it only applies MNR on that spot.

The little box is optional serial option piece. Which plugs in the USB port in the back and has rs-232 port on it for control. I integrated this to my URC(universal remote control) MSC-400 master control unit. I access all functions via my MX-6000 remote with 2 way feed.
