Hi, as my amplifier has no HDMI interface(s) I am looking for an upscaler for my Laserdiscplayer. Today I use component connection between the LDP and my HDTV. Only sound goes via amplifier. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance! Klaus

1- crystalio 2 vps3300 or 3800 2- faroudja nrs (no hdmi) 3- panasonic dvd/vhs combo recorder as upscaler 4- dvdo edge 5- new receiver with upscaling capability How does a DVD recorder rank that highly to you? Do you have an example?

Dvd recorders have good comb filters and analog to digital convertors but generic deinterlacing and scaling. Faroudja has mediocre 2d comb but very good deinterlacing best noise reduction. Dvdo edge is the only modern vp with 3d comb filter(fine at best)best deinterlacing and very good scaling no suitable noise reduction for ld. Only crystalio 2 is the perfect vp for ld with best comb filter best analog to digital conversion best deinterlacing best scaling good noise reduction. But crystalio 2 rarely show up for sale and pricey for most, given that its old tech and only suitable for cable box, ld, dvd etc.. cant integrate with bluray and 3d.
I counted the others as good easily obtainable and cheaper alternatives. You can chain a DVD recorder to a DVDO Edge. It doesn't need to be one or the other.

substance wrote: Early hdmi specs did not include 480i.Some body has to confirm if the dvd recorder can output 480i over hdmi, there is really a handful dvd player that does that. Some of them for some strange reason deinterlace to 480p then interlace to 480i on hdmi output stage(denon 2930 for example). This causes all sort of deinterlacing artifacts and renders dvdo edge edge uuseless. One can of course use component(this could be 480p to 480i converted on some device) or svideo out but this causes one extra d/a and a/d conversion. Right, you'd use analog component. If you took a capture of the same thing but with one going through an additional comparable a/d to d/a step or vice versa, it's not going to make a visible difference. If an LD program came from a digital master, that's an additional conversion, your player puts the signal through another a/d to d/a step, and then you have to get it back to digital again if you have a digital display or an HD direct-view CRT that converts to 1080i or 480p internally.

What about the deinterlacer/upscaler chips that claim to be able to work on a signal that has already been poorly deinterlaced? I think it was an ABT that I read about back when I was researching AVRs in 2011.
