Also are 720p sets superior to 1080p sets generally?

Thanks.

Those would be my guesses.

Plasma has CRT like phosphor light emission and better black levels and shadow detail.

720p would provide an easier upscaling.

I'd say they can be. The problem with LCDs is they don't do full blown RGB, so the smallest gradients and changes aren't produced but digitally dithered instead. Plasma's don't have that limitation and 480P sets won't scale the image (scaling can soften the image with interpolation. I don't know of any LCD that doesn't scale). Plasma's can sometimes have wrong blacks and colors resulting in blacks being sort of purple, red, or blue, and this ends up making colors look wrong (like having the wrong tint), but good plasma's should have proper blacks and colors; the ones that don't may only need some service adjustment though, unless it's a really cheap set that has problems.

1080P is better than 720P. Unless it's a pretty low-end 1080P set, 1080P is always better.

10 years ago I would say plasma was better every time. LCDs are getting really good though, so I don't know what the current state of things is.

As far as color accuracy, plasma crushes LCD, and so does CRT.

Yes it is better in every way except power consumption. A $900 plasma will beat $2500 lcd so bad you wont believe it. Like all things the inferior technology wins in mass market. Plasma is dead, samsung announced no more plasma next year. This leaves behing lg alone which will probably follow the suit soon

The major downside to plasma (aside from increasing rarity) is you won't ever find one under 30", one of the big reasons LCD won out in the long run.

Personally I still rock a CRT, but that's just me.

I've always wondered why their weren't smaller scale plasma screens that were 30" and bellow.

Fujitsu had a 32" plasma in the early 2000s and LG/Insignia/Vizio had a 32" plasma for bargain price in 2008. I just picked up one of these. There were tons of Insignias but even more so Vizios because they were sold in Best Buys nationwide (Insignia) and Walmart nationwide Vizio. I picked up a recapped power supply board Vizio VP322 from a TV repair shop for $150. It's an LG panel and the blacks arent all that great but there is a ton to like about it. The legacy video game consoles look great on it.

Unfortunately there is no zoom function on it, so letterbox LD cant be zoomed to fit the screen. Are there any LD players with Zoom or Adjustable Overscan or something?

We have a 50" panasonic plasma. Cost £1200 last year so was one of the better models The picture from my laserdisc's is ok. I would put it on power with sd tv reception. Must say however the best way I've found to watch them is through my projector which is a cheap acer model projected onto a white black out blind ☺:) Colours maybe aren't as good as the TV but the overall image quality is better which I put down to the projector not scaling the image.

My friend has this one 42" LCD from AOC that has one function I haven't come across on too many other LCD's/plasmas.

When deciding the what you want to do with the picture as in "ZOOM" "STRETCH" "NORMAL" "SIDE STRETCH" and what have you, it also has "PIXELxPIXEL" (I think that's what it's called.) It will display the image's actual resolution centered on the screen without any scaling. So since the TV has a resolution of 1366x768, an SD cable image was heavily windowboxed in the center of the screen.

I should have tried to bring an LD player by to see how that would turn out.

Samsung sold laptop computers with plasma displays in the eighties, I think Toshiba did too. But they were high-resolution monochrome (amber on black, or vice vera), not colour, and used so much power they could only be used plugged in. I've never seen a small colour plasma display. Maybe they would have been developed if LCD hadn't been lighter and more suitable for laptops, and thus attracted serious development money.

later - done a little checking - Compaq and Toshiba seem to have been the main companies that tried plasma display laptops / portable PCs, and resolution was poorer than I thought I remembered, looks like basic CGA or EGA equivalent with four "grey" scales.

My brother was given a Pioneer PDP-6020FD 60" Kuro Plasma by his boss.

It was only used to watch American Football on Sundays in the Fall (was mounted to the wall in his "Football Bus" when they went to the stadium) so it has low hours.

Lucky SOB!!!!

The most despresing thing about large high end TVs is that they are mainly used by fans of football, the single worst game ever invented, in such an inebriated state they can barely see let alone judge video quality. After 10 years they have nothing but sports statistics and Bob Costa’s face burned into the screen. There’s 500 of those situations for every guy that owns a copy of Citizen Kane.

When I went to pickup my current main LD screen, Sony XBR-960, it was playing Veggie Tales off analog cable...stretched. I’ve been feeding it Criterion LDs for years now and I think it’s back to full health.

I will likely sell my Pioneer Elite Pro-141FD Signature Edition soon. It is the best TV I have owned but I have invested so much into 4K.

NO, you are wrong. People like this keep the economy going, we need more people to spend their monies.

If they don't then we can't sell things to then buy things etc.

From a personal point I can't see it but then again I'm not making what Substance is.

A friend of mine mentioned that he thought his LD's look better than he expected on his 4K TV using the composite input (forgot to ask him what brand and model he had) so maybe we can be somewhat comforted that newer display technologies aren't always so bad w/ older sources.

While on the topic of displays for LD, what's everyone's opinion on DLP picture quality with LD? I have a 2008 65" Mitsubishi DLP that I am in the process of setting up to replace a 2001 46" Mitsubishi CRT RPTV.

My 2017 4K Bravia is basically as good as my XBR-960 at LD so...we’re there finally, IMHO.

:shrugs:

I don't drink much so I never watched football in an inebriated state. Neither does my Dad, and glad we watch football so we have another thing to bond over. I don't think we've ever celebrated so loudly when our team, the Philadelphia Eagles won the Superbowl this year!

And I was able to witness some amazing camaraderie at the Championship Parade this past February with this photo I took that went viral on Facebook as some people weren't as lucky as I to have my Dad around to celebrate:

Eagles victory parade produces one of the most touching sports stories ever

But hey, if not for a drunken football fan, my brother might not have an almost new Kuro Plasma for free (and I might end up buying it off of him)!!

Isn't the 141FD a monitor?

Personally I find it much more depressing that 90% of all sets sold are only used in torch mode, making everything look awful. As a colorist and purist I find it almost offensive.
