| Post subject: | Advice needed on hookup - DVD Recorder + iScan VP50 |
Hello All, I recently picked up an iScan VP50 (not the PRO) recently online. (Amazing how cheap this stuff is now) Currently, I have a Panasonic DMR-E50 that I had been using to port my CLD-D704 to a Panasonic Plasma HDTV. CLD-D704 (composite) -> DMR-E50 (component) -> Plasma TV With the new scaler, I am assuming this will be much improved over the above, but I'm questioning whether I should keep the DVD recorder in play given the superior (?) comb filter. Something like this ~ CLD-D704 (composite) -> DMR-E50 (component) -> iScan VP50 (HDMI) -> Plasma TV Or should I pull the DMR-E50 out of the loop and go ~ CLD-D704 (composite) -> iScan VP50 (HDMI) -> Plasma TV Or is this perhaps a trial and see approach? I think the expertise exists here on the board to answer the above as I have seen similar threads in the past. A definitive answer would be appreciated. |

I think if you go through the DMR-E50 for comb filtering and then to the iScan VP50 for deinterlacing and scaling you'll get the best possible results with your current setup. The DVDO-units aren't well known for good comb filters but some DVD recorders have very good ones (and underwhelming scaling/deinterlacing). But my suggestion is that you just try out different combinations and settings to see whatever looks the best. |

Dvdo vp50 has a Philips 2D comb filter(4 line). I think 704 has a 3 line so its an improvement from 704. Try the e50 it will probably comb bettet but you will have vp50 digitize the component input. Dvdo products have strong analog filters sometimes results too digitized picture. It would best if you had a hdmi out dvd recorder. |

Yes, the picture does seem over-digitized (grainy) going ~ CLD-D704 (composite) -> DMR-E50 (component) -> iScan VP50 (HDMI) -> Plasma TV So, would an inexpensive HDMI-out Panasonic DVD recorder (like the EZ27 or EZ28) really make a difference? CLD-D704 (composite) -> DMR-EZ27 (HDMI) -> iScan VP50 (HDMI) -> Plasma TV I appreciate the help. |

Ok, so I picked up a DVD recorder with HDMI out and I'm confused on the settings. Should I output from the DVD recorder in 480p 4:3 and let the iScan do the scaling? |

480i into the VP50 if possible and let that do the scaling. Deinterlacing in the VP50 is going to be superior to any DVD recorder. |

I get new equipment DVDO iSCAN VP50 (not Pro) $200 Pioneer PDP-4280 Plasma (1024x768) $ 150 Obtained plasma with poor resolution for LD Has KRP-500 (Full HD plasma) Think LD is not the best in Full HD I got the VP50 because I let go of iSCAN DUO Is the final firmware for the VP50 available now? What do you think of the combination of VP50 and PDP-4280? Do you think you will succeed? Or do you have a File? |

Sorry, I have no idea all I know is my own setup. I love my VP-50. It switches sources and adjusts aspect ratios/overscans/underscans like a dream. Got it 5 years ago and just had to change out the PSU once to keep it running. I believe my KV-HR36 Wide CRT in Super Fine Pitch mode does all the heavy lifting when it comes to the picture quality, which I'm extremely satisfied with: LD player (composite) -> VP-50 (RGBHV) -> KV-HR36M31 (SUPER FINE PITCH) -> my eyes I like Groo too and good luck PowerofLD |

thank you for contacting I will buy in the future. I'm looking for SUPER FINE PITCH SONY SUPER FINE PITCH WEGA CRT Is SUPER FINE PITCH compatible with LD? Or is the normal FD Trinitron good? forper wrote: Sorry, I have no idea all I know is my own setup.

Super Fine Pitch = 1440x1080i Hi-Scan = 853x1080i The rest are 480i. My Hi-Scan looks better than my Super Fine Pitch right now because it doesn't have convergence issues. I need to take the time to tweak both to see the difference in picture quality. |

I think that LD on my setup looks very good with Super Fine Pitch turned on, worse with it off. That's all I know, I'm not a science guy. |

My SFP CRT is just a special case. It wasn't treated well, had been used heavily and has had multiple owners. I had been looking for one for so long that when I saw this I jumped on it immediately even though I should have passed this one up. In addition to the convergence being way off, I've already replaced a part on it and I think I need to replace a capacitor somewhere because I'm getting some weird horizontal distortion in the picture. The geometry on my Hi-Scan CRT is a little off, but I purchased it from the original owner who took good care of it. I just need to find the time to get them back into shape. Most of it can be done through the service menu. |

I have one of those 1024HDs coz i thought it might work as a genlock for subs and it was cheap. But I was foolish and it didn't work at all and I ended up with a TVOne unit. I still hang on to the Sony in case I get a projector when my CRT dies. For some reason I think the 1024 HD will be useful for a projector setup> I can't remember if it will actually be useful, drinking too much... |

It is a pity that the output is only D-SUB (VGA). You can try the projector from VGA to component conversion But it's possible with VP50 DSC-1024 will be used less frequently Since the DSC-1024 has a line doubler function, I will keep it for that. But TBC is also essential for the line doubler to work (The upper part of the screen shakes only with the line doubler) The device was sold for $ 6000 in 2000, Now it's lacking in performance |

Good info power of LD. Yeah all I know is that line doubler is what you need for old projectors and it might come in handy, maybe out to the VP50 or in conjunction with a TBC. Yeah to work as a genlock I think it needed a black burst generator or something.. This stuff goes over my head and hurts my brain until it's in front of me and I can trial and error test everything..Even manuals and stuff aren't always clear to a dumb-brain like me. Oh well at least I got the 1024HD for $100 instead of $6000! |

I agree. DSC-1024HD was cheap $ 10 + shipping (lol LDP → DSC (line doubler) → 4280 monitor This is described in the DSC manual, but the top of the screen shakes To use the line doubler LDP → TBC → DSC (line doubler) → VP50 → 4280 monitor I buy a device with 3dYC & TBC & frame synchronizer built in (looking forward) There is also an opinion that the frame synchronizer is more important than TBC for LD. |
