Sounds like electromagnetic interference. Try wrapping the power cable around a ferrite core, or snapping on a ferrite bead.

Some electronics will give off a "high pitched" noise when on. This may be normal. Also depends on how loud it is, it shouldn't be too loud. Try plugging it in on a different circuit to see if it goes away. If it's a ground loop issue you can try using an isolator and see if that breaks it up.

When I do the EQ in my living room I have to switch off the CRT as its registering on the RTA as 16,000KHz and would give false readings when doing the EQ.

Wow, that must be pretty bad if it's being picked up on the EQ of the room. May I suggest getting rid of the CRT and buying something new? 30" seems kind of small anyway. THX recommended viewing angle is 30-35 degrees, so you literally have to be watching it at arms length. Granted for LD's it is not as important as blu-ray's due to lower resolution but still. You can get some relatively inexpensive flat screens if you don't want to go much bigger than what you have. If you want a bigger picture, you could always buy DLP and it's pretty cheap. And ultimately if you want a really big picture there is projector (I use this for a 150" screen),... it really is like being in the theater, I highly recommend it.

If you want to stick with the CRT, which definitely has its benefits, look on Craigslist for some used ones. You can get good deal and high quality CRTs there. The Sony Wega 1080i TVs are some of the best. However, if you're looking for the other benefits of CRTs, that they make all SD material look better, like video game systems, you may what to consider a SD CRT, as HD CRTs are incompatible with light guns such as the NES Zapper. You can get a really nice 2000s era SD CRT with Component inputs, picture in picture, SVM, and good picture geometry very cheap if you look. I've bought several in my area for less than $40. All 32in sizes.

There are also plenty of high end Projection CRTs to be found for cheap. The ~60in. Pioneer Projection TVs are available for less than $200 around me. These will also work with SD signals much better.

I would definitely get a large projection TV if I had the room. Right now I have a Samsung Plasma for HD content, and a Toshiba CRT for legacy game systems. My LD player is hook up to my Plasma though so I can zoom on letterboxed content.
