Post subject:  LD screenshots
Just wondering how you'd do a grab of a laserdisc. It's not like you can play it and do a screen grab if you know what i mean!

Well the simplest way is to just take a really good photo of your TV in identical lighting conditions.

Second simplest would be to hook your player to a DVD recorder, dupe the LD onto a DVD and then take a grab of that on your PC.

And the hardest method is to actually connect your player directly to your PC with some kind of a capture device.

Of course, I already own the former, so for all I know both second and third method are equally difficult, they both just require you to dish out the cash for the respective devices - and if that's all it boils down to, I'd probably have more use for a capturing device than I do for a DVD recorder.

If I remember rightly you need a camera with a blade shutter to take a shot of the tv screen or you'll get scan lines.

I thought you were asking if you should take the risk to buy an LD player?

It's getting harder and harder to get a top notch player and just as hard to maintain them. We really do need a new player on the market even if it is only to play what's out there.

How can you tell others ways to take pictures if you don't even own an LD.

Just a question, if you do own an LD then great, but taking a picture with a camera is nice but no way the best.

That's how people took blu-ray screencaps too before the right software cropped up!

It's still the only way to capture a laserdisc image of a laserdisc as there is no way to link up a laserdisc player to a computer.

IMO there is no real way to do it. Half of what you see when you watch an LD is the way your TV presents it. There are inumerable ways to digitize an LD but no way whatsoever to really show you what I'm seeing on my end.

My preferred method is photographing the screen. You don't need a focal plane shutter so much as you need to manually select the shutter speed. Modern TVs are easier but don't usually look very good without processing.

Display is a new for 2017 Sony X720E which honestly blows my dang MIND it looks so good with LDs. I've only tested it with my 604 which isn't even that great of a deck, composite straight it.

Thank goodness Sony hasn't gone out of business yet. They still make great TVs with not too terrible menus and apparently extremely good SD stages.

You need to freeze the image on screen and then use a slow shutter speed or else you'll get the scan lines. No idea what would happen using a digital camera but certainly using 35mm you need to freeze frame and use a slow shutter speed.

You don't want to freeze the image on screen since that gives you a crappy still. CAV stills are pretty good I guess.

I use shutter speeds in the 20s with my SLR with some success.

If you have an x9 or s9 the freeze frames are superb both in CAV and CLV.

Nikon D3200 w/ Nikor 35mm 1.8, ISO 400 1/40. Player was a 604 on a big multiscan pro monitor from...Net TV, no not that one.

Yes, this is the only real way I've ever taken pictures.
But then again I've had a player and discs for a very long time, I never asked a question in the realm of is it worth the risk to buy an LD player and then just won one.

I had no idea they started this thread that long ago! :shock:

Anyway, there ARE ways to connect a Laserdisc player to a computer, a friend of mine used one of these to stream a game online from a console a while back and it uses composite video in. If you can stream that stuff online with it, I'm sure taking screencaps shouldn't present a problem at all. Although signofzeta is probably right, you'd have to use some kind of an external video processor to get them in decent quality.
