The widescreen CRT was only ever a USA feature and I'll pretty sure it was mainly Sony who did them. There are Toshiba, JVC, and others I’m sure. Honestly though in the CRT days Sony was usually an extremely safe bet. I have the XBR960, the fanciest thing they ever sold in the US tube-wise. It’s 16:9, 720p, 34”, HDMI, digital tuner, it’s ridiculous. Even the speakers are great. I’m so grateful my new 4K Sony seems to do a very good job with LD because I’ve been dreading what to do as far as replacing the 250lb tube when it dies. Absolutely nobody will service it and it’s an extinct beast but it’s fantastic for LD.

We also had Panasonic wide CRTs and a few other manufacturers at the time. I bought a Sony KVHR-36 M31 on gumtree for $100 5 years ago. Best thing I've ever bought. The last TV I'll need realistically. Had to replace the some chips last year that fire it up but she's still got a beautiful picture Only thing is I have to move in the next couple of months. Moved house with it 3 times already and it's survived but not looking forward to those looks on the mover's faces again..

roger wrote: How? Surely you need a S-VHS to HDMI adapter. No modern TV's have S-VHS inputs anymore of any sort. You are talking about S-Video connector, right LD will be better with composite unless you have a really high end player. This wasn't the case for me with CRT but now with all the other types of monitors and projectors you are better off with the Yellow composite. On another note, as long as TVs have the cable/antenna coax connector we will be fine, just pickup some RCA to coax adapters and you can still get an image. Real problem are the player not how to connect to the TVs.

You can still hook an S-video cable from the player to a SCART adapter which then connects to the TV. And even if the regular yellow composite cable is better, like rein-o said, the SCART adapters have those, too. Unless your new TV doesn't have SCART. In which case I'm really starting to hate the future.
