I was rummaging through a thrift store today and found a strange, white box. It was a Sony MBD-XBR950. I had no idea what it was, it had Digital Media Receiver and WEGA Engine printed on it. $20 with a three-day return policy so I bought it. I got it home, disconnected the Lumagen Vision HDP, and plugged it in between the CLD-79 and the Canon X700. I didn't have a remote, so I fumbled through the menu until I found the correct input setting, and a picture appeared. A really amazing picture! I don't know what this thing was made for, but it has a great 3D comb filter in it. I'm using composite in and DVI out, adjusted it to 4:3, with max noise reduction. The picture is brilliant. Please let me know if you find a manual for it, and/or you want to buy a Vision HDP. |

Yeah the Sony WEGA line with XBR brand have AMAZING comb filters. Looks like it's a Plasma TV with a resolution of 1365x768. I've found that Plasmas do LD pretty darn well. Nice find! |

Thanks. Makes sense now. It's like the guts of a Sont Wega without the screen. This is by far the best my LDs have ever looked, and projected at 110". The features sound exactly like the XBR960 guts as far as I can tell, and that’s my LD display. It would be great to have that stuff not shackled to a 250 lb tube. |

No. It’s because you have one of those that you DO want this. The reason is that our big tubes will die or more likely the drivers will. If you have the headless version you can combo it with almost any quality display regardless of its features and still get good results, potentially much better. As you sit how, you’re screwed when that set dies. |

Found a cheap one on Ebay. Decided to get it. Really love the comb filter in the WEGAs that I had, so if this has the same filter, I'll be ecstatic. |

Okay, so I got the box and hooked it up to my bedroom LEDTV with the DVI output using a Pearstone Male DVI-D to Female HDMI and plugged my Panasonic LX-900 into the box via composite (of course) and queued up the Snell & Wilcox test pattern from Video Essentials. Good news - the comb filter performs exactly as it does in the XBR, Hi-Scan and SuperFinePitch WEGAs if not better. Bad news - for some reason it sorta squeezes the image off to the left a couple inches or so. Tried changing the zoom and 4:3 settings, to no avail. Though it might be an issue with the LD player at first (you know that one problem that is reported of the early LX-900's and Runco LJR models of a portion of the right side of the image being cut off), but then I plugged a DVD recorder into the box via component and had the same problem. I'm guessing it might be a problem with the DVI-D adapter I used. I have a DVI to HDMI cable at work. I'll try that and see if that changes things. |

Interesting. Thanks for the update. Have you tried putting the XBR950's signal through a scaler to rectify the distorted portion of the widescreen image? |

I ordered one of these and I am able to test through a processor to correct zoom. I think your problem is the 900, I can't believe no one talks about the huge chunk of the image that they cut off on the right side... Anyone know what resolution it outputs and is it adjustable? |

Well, like I said, the box did the same thing when I plugged in a DVD recorder via component, so it's not the LD player. As far as the resolution goes, I'm surmising that since the Plasma monitor it was specifically made for had a native resolution of 1365x768, that's the resolution it outputs. |

Either way I'm excited to test this, I've always thought there was a cheap LD holy grail box out there and this sounds promising. |

It does, but the box (thankfully accessible on the unit itself--remote not necessary) has settings you can toggle so you can display a 4:3 image normally (ie: sideboxed) while the display reads it as 1365x768 16:9 |
