Googling for 1408x792, it seems that's it's very popular resolution for gaming devices because it matches the underlying SRAM used for video buffering.

Supported by PlayStation and XBOX consoles. Some "above 720p yet optimized for hardware" resolution it seems?

Yet the manual lists the bundled displays as:

• KDE42XBR950 = 1024 pixels (horizontal) × 768 pixels (vertical)
• KDE50XBR950 = 1365 pixels (horizontal) × 768 pixels (vertical)
• KDE61XBR950 = 1365 pixels (horizontal) × 768 pixels (vertical)

Would the "missing" part be hiding the pixels from 1366 to 1408?

I was rummaging through a thrift store today and found a strange, white box. It was a Sony MBD-XBR950. I had no idea what it was, it had Digital Media Receiver and WEGA Engine printed on it. $20 with a three-day return policy so I bought it. I got it home, disconnected the Lumagen Vision HDP, and plugged it in between the CLD-79 and the Canon X700. I didn't have a remote, so I fumbled through the menu until I found the correct input setting, and a picture appeared. A really amazing picture! I don't know what this thing was made for, but it has a great 3D comb filter in it. I'm using composite in and DVI out, adjusted it to 4:3, with max noise reduction. The picture is brilliant.

Please let me know if you find a manual for it, and/or you want to buy a Vision HDP.

My test disc is still packed up, but isn't the that video essentials 4.3? So the correct image would be the bottom, right??

I cut and pasted to do a comparison so you aren't seeing the full frame, it is 4:3 in both, the top one is correct and the bottom one is squeezed with that gray bar on the right taking up a portion of the frame.

New info - the MBD-XBR900 looks similar but also has an S-Video out (manual says for VCR recording), I assume this will output a standard resolution. I got one on ebay for $40 + free shipping...

Hmmmm...if that's anything like the "monitor out" on a standard WEGA TV, that's usually only good to pass the over-the-air TV signal out to a recorder.

Sorry I didn't fully read your post, seems strange shouldn't 1366x768 fill a 16x9 screen? Either way I'm excited to test this, I've always thought there was a cheap LD holy grail box out there and this sounds promising.

Quests for holy grails are always hard (still waiting for that shrubbery) and even when seeming possible, often don't exist in as easy form as we'd like. The MBD-XBR950 as per OP seems quite promising for anyone with a processor that needs a comb filter upgrade but otherwise the scaling issue for the horizontal squeeze becomes a killer.

A similar model with s-video out has promise to overcome that issue but then again from a bit of reading many modern TV's don't accommodate s-video? If that's not an issue though (multi-function component in?) something like this could potentially be the 'DVD recorder solution' killer.

I believe it will work, manual mentions using two VCRs for copying, it will not know that the LD signal is not a VCR -

It definitely would be the DVD Recorder killer. A lot of DVD Recorders had some very good comb filters, but none come close to these Sony WEGA filters. I considered trying to pick up some Sony DVD Recorders trying to see if any of them have the same comb filters as the WEGAs, but they're kind of hard to find.

Now I don't even have to if these media connector boxes by Sony can be made to work like a stand alone filter.
