I definitely would not bother with a CRT for BD. I actually got the one I am currently using for free, because someone was moving and didn't want to have to deal with taking it with them.

If you've got an HD-CRT that can display 1080/23.976PsF natively, you can get some rather fantastic results. Of course it's easy to point at the finest Grade1 CRTs and let them set the bars (though they were extemely expensive) but if anyone knows an consumer HD-CRT set that can display 23.976PsF properly I'd certainly be very interested in checking it out.

To me, 3:2 cadence can be a deal breaker depending on other qualities offered by the display though it's nowhere near as visible in 1080i as 480i due to the thinner scanlines but it's still there. Downscaling Blu-Rays to 480i in order to display the signal on a 15KHz CRT can look very sharp indeed but you'll get plenty of moire pretty much all of the time. The lack of macroblocking, CUE and other artifacts is still great however.

I definitely wasn't considering production grade monitors, I am sure those are fine for BD. Every consumer HD set I have ran into is 1080i but I am sure there is some 1080p set out there.

Are parts that readily available for these?

Thanks, I guess if Tasuke is the Pioneer fanboy here I'm the Sony one, basically everything is Sony except my DVDO.

Yeah generic chips are readily available and cheap on ebay, got a few spares as well because it's the most common point of failure for these units apparantly. Getting to the board without damaging anything and desoldering/resoldering 16 points or something was the hard part.

I wish I knew how to take decent pics of my display, it really does look incredible to me everytime in real life. I'm not into BD but for DVD and LD I'm completely satisfied. DVDO lets me fix aspect ratio problems and that Super Fine Pitch just looks so good. Superlative to me.

Just have to keep it running and slowly upgrade and backup my working LD units. I have 2 players working currently. Dream is an MDP-999 and a HIL-C1 or C2...........

The only issue you will have are the caps in the future.
You should look into how to recap the chassis boards so you know what to do in the future.

Taking off the flyback is pretty easy once you know what and how to do it, then taking off the board is the next step.
If your TV is about 15-20 years old it will probably need it soon.

Also check on how to repair arcade monitors, they have great info for the future so you will know what to look for.

I see a HS420 for sale locally for $80. Should I go for it or hold out for an XBR?

you might have to wait a long time or not but either way I'd probably get the H5420 but that's just me.

I wouldn't pay $80 but I got one for free, used it a bit then gave it away. There wasn't anything wrong with it, I just needed to cut back on CRTs. Obviously every area is different. I got an excellent condition XBR800 for free and an XBR960 for $10, so there is no shortage here. If you've been looking for awhile, maybe try to haggle them down a bit.

I love this statement.

Thanks for the replies. I'll see if I can get it for cheaper or just hold out.

yeah I forgot about the price though at one time I had a good Sony one though it was slightly hard to manage with one person so I had to get rid of that as well as other CRTs but found a small Polaroid for $3 bucks and well I bought it since it was the right price and size for me. ATM I have in the closet, I hope to bring it out again when I get all my stuff. I mainly got for Virtua Cop and other light gun games.

LD looks IMO as good as it gets on my xbr960. Even discs thought to have subpar transfers can really shine.

LD does look absolutely lovely on these displays.

I had my 99 fixed (thanks, Grasshopper) and when it came back I was naturally looking very close at everything. I saw significant ringing in high contrast areas. For example the 60s MGM logo that’s blue and white. You see everything repeated diminishingly to the right. I was pretty sad but then I did some diagnosis and it turns out the issue is the Video 1 composite jack on my XBR960. Oddly the s-video works perfectly.

Luckily the 960 has six inputs plus HDMI. There are a few to spare. :)

Now it looks better than anything. This is truely a magic combo. I wish there was a way to convey how great this looks over the internet.

Well, I know how great LD looks with my players on a 960 and even the 800 so I can kind of imagine.

I'm getting the itch to buy some movies on LD. I've long since watched everything I have currently (not counting the karaoke discs included with one of my players).

I was running the old standard letterboxed Where Eagles Dare last night which isn't supposed to have a good transfer-I was expecting it to be a usual MGM/UA crapshoot in terms of video and was watching to see the exclusive UK version with the intermission. The opening was a little ropey in picture quality but then suddenly the transfer took off and the rest of the film looked great! Plus the 960's zoom function on the non-digital inputs is practically designed for scope films.

Just picked up a KV-34HS510 for $15 locally with the original stand sold with it (which I was told cost $300 new!).

It isn't a Super Fine Pitch model, so I'm still holding out for one of the 34" 16:9 Super Fine Pitch CRTs like the 960, but I'm certainly enjoying this for now.

I'd buy one myself if I knew if it supported PAL as well.

Not that I would need PAL probably...just might want to hook up something besides an LD player to it, that's all.

Do be honest there are advantages to the normal Trinitrons. The 960 etc only operate at one res, 720p or 1080i, so video games look a lot better on the true SD displays. The 960 was kinda made for LD though. Even though we were well into DVD by the time the 960 came out it really prioritized SD signals a lot.

Yeah, the 960 is lovely. I've been using my 800 a lot again lately. It's HD but not SFP. LD is really nice on it. My 960 has the static coating basically worn off so I have to manage that to use it. Plus, they are heavy and the 800 is already hooked up. In general my 800 is in much better shape than the 960, which counts for a lot these days imo. If I had to guess the 960 I have saw a lot more use than the 800 before I got them both.

Comments like this really make me want to keep my eyes peeled for one.

I had my 3080 plugged up and it was a significant improvement. I need to get my CLD-99 out and see what S-Video looks like.

I don't have a spot for my LD-S2 near the CRT (which I also don't have a spot for), but once I get things situated, I can't wait to get that combo going.

Even the one you got will be very very nice with LD. I hope it's in good shape. Given that they had the stand, that bodes pretty well. Happy watching.

The 800 I have is the only time I've encountered someone that had the specific stand for these. The settings weren't all screwed up and the volume wasn't way too high, a truly rare experience.

It was the original owner. Both the TV and stand are like new and spotless, but it was quite dusty. I might take the back off and dust the heatsinks if needed.

Yeah the stand really enticed me. I just wish they made one that matches the KD-34XBR960. That would look really nice.
