I have a nice working Sony Trinitron KV-32XBR100 is it worth holding onto? I don't use it anymore, Is it worth anything?

What its worth depends on where you live but its basically garbage $$$ wise. If you're in Michigan I'd give you something for it but if you don't live in a decent sized city you'll have a hard time offing it for nothing at all.

Looks pretty cool.

Zeta is right. CRTs are desirable in small circles (LD, vintage video games etc...) but the big bucks are for the PVMs and BVMs. Otherwise, it's fairly worthless. I have a lot of great CRT tvs and monitors, all acquired for $10 or less and mostly free.

I remember back in Nashville there was a super high end CRT with component connections, didn't even have composite or S-Video.
New it was stupid expensive, can't remember now but I was thinking about it at the time.

It was a 32 inch and sat there for at least 6 months before they sent it to another goodwill. It was around $25-35.

I remember selling this model in the day and always loved it. It's a 2 piece TV w/ the separate AV control box and was the first of the flat tube TV's. I think I recall it having one of the better comb filters so I would think it's very ideal for LaserDisc. The only minor issue is that the TV doesn't have component video inputs but that's a minor thing.

As for how much it's worth, it depends if you find a buyer that really wants something like it and the condition of the unit. I would not think you'll get much in that case or anything at all. Probably a good idea to test the market by putting it on eBay and see if it attracts any interest.

Based on my own experiences I sure wouldn't want to ship a CRT.

And yeah I think this thing would be pretty sweet for VHS and LD.

See this thread: Anyone have a Sony 32XBR100?

A number of us talk about KV-32XBR100 and wonder how well it would perform for LD (imagining it would probably be amazing.)

If you caught me about 3 years ago and were within 60 miles or so of me, I probably would have been interested. However, I think I'm done with big heavy CRTs these days.

Ohhhh the lifting! Think of the lifting.

I'm not sure what I am going to do when my current 200 pound CRT kicks the bucket.

Yeah, that's my main reason for abandoning CRT. Just couldn't bring myself to move those around anymore. Especially since the best ones, the Sony WEGAs, are much heavier than regular CRTs.

Was sad to take my last CRT, Sony Super Fine Pitch KD-36XS955, to the recycling center, but it had to go. All 250 lbs of it.

That, and since blu-ray hit its stride in the last 6 years or so and other companies are stepping up and bringing out a lot of obscure titles that I never thought would receive a proper restoration, I didn't want to compromise that format anymore.

I definitely would not bother with a CRT for BD. I actually got the one I am currently using for free, because someone was moving and didn't want to have to deal with taking it with them.

Oh man, this reminds me about the time my wife and I were looking for an apartment to rent and it had a massive beast of a CRT that the landlord said we could use
and the last tenant left it...

Normal Blurays shine on HD or HD ready CRTs. For watching movies or playing games CRTs are very pleasant because of contrast refresh rate, colours etc..
Only for UHD 10 bit HDR and 3D Bluray you will defenitely need something else.

You lose resolution on most. Many max at 1080i. This of course goes out the window for monitors as those go way higher.

Post subject:  Re: Sony Trinitron KV-32XBR100

Do keep in mind the resolution wasn’t the biggest upgrade from Blu-ray over DVD, the biggest thing was actually having all the bandwidth you needed for the resolution being displayed, which DVD didn’t.

It’s been a while but I’ve watched a lot of Blurays and they look basically like the best DVD player ever made. There is zero macroblocking visable anywhere ever. That would have been worth it’s weight in gold in the 90s. And of course you’d still have the audio upgrades.

The menus often become totally unreadable though. If you’ve ever played a lot of PS3 on CRT you know what I mean.

I was going to mention lack of blocking as well but I see you covered that. BD kicks DVD in the rear to be sure.

I have experienced PS3 over composite, I believe on a CRT as well but it's been many years now. But yeah it was suuuuper unreadable and drove me to look into improving my AV in general.

I would love a nice Sony widescreen HD CRT but I can't move one or any large CRT so I found a nice Polaroid 19" or smaller one. so i can have a CRT that i can easily move myself.

I'm on the lookout for one of these, hopefully for cheap... so I can pay someone to move it.

I bought a used Sony KVHR-M36 6 years back. Have had it moved 3 times between 3 different apartments and it's my pride and joy. It stopped firing up once and I did surgery on it for a week to install a new chip. Good as new. Fingers crossed.

If you've got an HD-CRT that can display 1080/23.976PsF natively, you can get some rather fantastic results. Of course it's easy to point at the finest Grade1 CRTs and let them set the bars (though they were extemely expensive) but if anyone knows an consumer HD-CRT set that can display 23.976PsF properly I'd certainly be very interested in checking it out.

To me, 3:2 cadence can be a deal breaker depending on other qualities offered by the display though it's nowhere near as visible in 1080i as 480i due to the thinner scanlines but it's still there. Downscaling Blu-Rays to 480i in order to display the signal on a 15KHz CRT can look very sharp indeed but you'll get plenty of moire pretty much all of the time. The lack of macroblocking, CUE and other artifacts is still great however.

Are parts that readily available for these?
