I've been backing up my laserdiscs digitally with the following signal chain: Pioneer CLD-1080 > Panasonic DMR-EZ47V (passthrough to convert composite to component) > Hauppauge HD-PVR2 (480i H.264 @ 14mbps i.e. max bitrate of the device) I posted a thread in another forum about chroma noise in both dark and light scenes and I started thinking about the fact that I have an AVT-8710 time base corrector sitting around. I believe I stopped using it years ago because I suspected it was introducing color banding to my VHS captures. Anyway, I wanted to know what benefits there are - if any - of introducing this to the signal chain after the LD player and before the Panasonic DVD recorder. Do you think the comb filter in the 8710 might be better than what the rest of the chain provides? If so, should I go into the TBC via composite and exit s-video into the Panasonic? I welcome any opinions as well as pointing out weak links in my signal chain. Thanks! - Alex |

Surely it's got to be just a process of trial and error. I doubt there's any other user with exactly the same equipment. Then again there are some video-braniacs on here.. |

Well, I did do a bit of trial and error, but the resultant video was fairly washed out. I wanted to check here before looking into that (maybe need to change some settings on the procamp or make sure something in the chain is seeing limited vs full color range) because you can really get yourself lost in a sea of "what is actually the right color?". If I had a reason to think there was a big advantage in using the TBC, I'd put some time into it. I know that having a good 3d comb filter is a very important part of the laserdisc signal chain, but I really don't know if there's something already in my chain that serves that purpose, and getting comb filter specs on my devices wasn't too fruitful. Anyway, I guess I'll leave it out unless I hear something definitive here. |

I actually already have a lot of the stuff in that article - Panasonic AG-1980P, JVC HR-S7600U, etc - but I didn't know how important or useful an external TBC was for a laserdisc as I don't have any issues with tearing or bouncing. I do appreciate the link though. |
