They both look like The Worst Toilet in Scotland to me.

Check this out:

acuozzo @ Squeezing every bit of detail out of a laserdisc

https://www.analog.com/en/design-center ... b-overview

https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/2700452

I have not used it but it seems to be well regarded for LD capture. Composite input, best comb filter on the market and HDMI output.

Hope this helps...

That's pretty interesting - expensive too, but something to keep in mind for the future. I don't see any audio inputs on the board - not necessarily a problem, but depending on the latency of the board, it might require adding post-processing to sync the audio from my capture device. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you been following the software decoder project?

No, but I did watch a good part of an interview on RetroRGB just now. It sounds really, really interesting. I wish I had the skills/balls to install the thing that attaches to the RF header, but I think that's above my skillset. I like that it just spits out RGB that you can feed into FFMPEG. I designed all the video/disc output presets for commercial software a few years ago (Blu-ray, AVCHD, DVD, H.264, etc), so getting exactly the best quality and specs out of FFMPEG is a breeze. It's just getting to that point that seems like a roadblock.

Very exciting to hear about this though - thanks for the heads up.

Just as an update to this thread, I waited until I found a cheap Panasonic DMR-ES15 on eBay (about $60 shipped and it only took a day to get here). I gotta say it actually did wonders for cleaning up chroma noise from a laserdisc source. On discs with lots of film grain, the multi-colored 'snow' now looks a lot more monochromatic. I need to compare some more captures, but I think this will be my go-to passthrough from now on.

Update 2:

I was at my local Goodwill today and found a JVC DR-MV150B - which came highly recommend by signofzeta. Anyway, I got it home and it was a bit quirky (it kept wanting to shut off after failing some sort of mechanical test), but after messing with it, I got it to stay on. After that I was happy to see that you could pass through 480i over HDMI, which would be my ideal scenario. Unfortunately, recordings would have a handful of visual glitches, audio glitches, and very shortly my recording device would just freeze up. I'm guessing that there's some sort of problem with not handling analog fluctuations to maintain a steady 480i signal at 29.97fps. On top of that, the video that I did manage to capture showed significant detail loss compared to any of my Panasonic recorders.

For $10, it was worth trying, but I think we can call this one a failed experiment. I accept the possibility that recording via the built-in DVD recorder or passing through via component might work better, but I just didn't see enough that made me want to mess with it further.

So the DVD recorder is broken or it works and you don't like the results?

I think it’s broke. Too bad. Probably sat too long.

Well, I think it's not operating at peak performance, but I have a feeling the thing with the capture card freezing is just how the DVD recorder handles analog inputs and sends them out via HDMI - a lot of devices don't handle HDMI signals well if they're not perfectly in spec. I could be wrong, but that's my feeling. And yes, the picture quality on it is pretty soft, at least over HDMI. Pretty night and day compared to the Panasonics.

Oh now I get it.
Sounds like your steam engine car won't run on your flux capacitor.

Yeah, I threw some banana peels and Pepsi cans in the Mr. Fusion, but apparently I misunderstood what that device was for. :)
