I picked this up at at Goodwill over the weekend for $2 over the weekend. It has the manual. I'm not sure of the purpose of this piece of equipment. It does have a video disc input. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

Well if it has the manual, why not just, y'know, read it?

Gee, I never thought of thought that..... Thanks.....

I did. I'm still confused as to its purpose. I'm not sure if it's just for if you were recording or it would have been beneficial for playback also.

At a glance it looks to be some sort of product for helping you run your 80s AV gear, routing signals for switching, dubbing, and with some basic ability to FX signals like fake stereo and fading out audio. It’s from the mid 80s and it’s far from pro grade so I’d imagine it isn’t that useful now.

Of course if you have the manual then you should know a lot more than I do. I’d assume it accurately describes every single function and you actually have it so it’s probably more reliable than my guess.

This is kind of what I was trying to say; reading the manual would provide enough clues for it's use.

If nothing else, you got yourself a decent A/V switch for $2 and that seems like a deal already, the rest is just bonus at this point.

I’d assume the manual would tell you everything about every function. This is 80s Teac after all. The last manual I got from them was over 100 pages long and that was 2015! (TASCAM DP24SD). When you get to a term you don’t understand, Google it...beyond that I’d say if you can run an LD player you’re probably good.

I wonder what the original price was for this thing. Less than $300?

Yea just use a switcher. It does look pretty cool.

Sorry to bump an older post with my first, but I have this (actually, the older AV-100 with no hue control) and have used it for years with LDs and a couple of consoles. It's NOT a switcher and shouldn't be used as one.

It was a pretty fancy thing to have back in the day for OB broadcasts and cutting to VTR and run crazy cheap these days. Basically, this does what the retrotink does, just waaaaaay cheaper. It's not a line doubler and doesn't output HD, but (especially on CRTs) it does effectively sharpen the image with fine adjustments to suit your tolerance for halos.

The label "Video Disc" is just a label, any composite signal works and the LD can be pugged in anywhere. The fader simply fades to black for live broadcasts and the colour wheel controls the hue. The DNR dial, at least on my unit, does diddly. There's even power delivery at the rear.

So, yea, for their price, these are somewhat undiscovered and well worth the time. Not magic, but a noticeable improvement for composite sources.

I would recommend anybody to give them a try if you come across them. Couple this with a decent switcher and you're golden.

I missed the DBX feature. That is pretty rad. The whole thing would have been really handy when I had a large setup of NTSC stuff and I made tapes all the time.
