My main to go upscaler for my pioneer cld 925 and the pioneer cld 1750 (in case I can fix it) is the retro tink 5x. The image quality is ok but I still think there is some room for improvment.

So I keep looking for some other upscaling devices to purchase at some point in the future.

I have 2 potential strategies.

Either using the upscaling features of m future avr . Some of the older Onkyo avr are on my checklist.

Plan b would to use DVDO scaler despite the fact they seem to be rather hard to get. No the mention the high price.

At least I though so.

When shopping around on ebay I found DV0 scaler from anchor bay technologies called

Anchor Bay Tech DVDO Scan HD Video Processor Model MM602

at good price.

I am not sure how big the costom fees be after importing it from the states.

Without considering the importing fees the offer is quite tempting.

But is the DVDO scaler a good representative of the DVD0 family of upscaler?

I used to have one of these well over 20 years ago when I still ran a Seleco CRT projector, its a very old piece of kit now and I don’t think it would give you any improvement at all with any format nowadays tbh so I would avoid it. If you can find a decent DVDO Duo or Edge then that’s the way to go or as previously advised and a great choice would be one of the Onkyo models suggested, just as long as you don’t mind a bulky AVR sat there just acting as an oversized video processor, use one of these and you will be surprised just how good LD can look. Is the comb filter not up to much in your current TV then?

Thanks for your answer. Then I will avoid these products and try to locate a DVDO Duo or Edge at good price. Maybe I am lucky at some point in the future. I would not mind having a bulky avr by the way. It would sit under the TV permanently anyway. It would not only be used for Laserdiscs but also for my PS5 to watch, DVD, Blu Ray, and UHD Blu Ray. For UHD the Onkyo might be a bit outdated becaues it does not support the latest sound formats but doesn`t matter. As a person who only knows the audio of plain TV speakers, I will be impressed with the older sound formats anyway. No need for DTS X or Dolby atmos as of now.

I cannot test the comb filters of my current TV. The.40 inch Panasonic Ex 604 lcd I have is equipped with composite inputs but they are broken now. Did not get any signal with cld 925, my ps1, n64 GameCube and my old VCR that had already worked with that inputs. I have also tested various composite cables. So the source of error must be the inputs.

I can watch LD movies only via my retro tink. The filters in that thing are geared towards gaming so you cannot expect the best picture. I think the image is decent but the tv itself might do a better job. When the inputs were still working the filter did a great job with some old VCR movies. I watched a pre-recorded tape of Terminator 1 and a commercial tabe of the movie The Peacemaker.

Assuming you have an older Retrotink, I'd probably get the new 4K one instead of getting a DVDO unit. I got a good bit of use out of my VP50Pro after it first came out (aside from minor ringing, it was good for getting a 1080p23.976 picture out of non-anime DVDs and LDs for use on my projector), but nowadays DVDO stuff is outdated, and they're notorious for failing. I recently recapped my VP50Pro, and both the PSU and the main unit had bad capacitors.

Thanks for the info about the potential shortcomings of the DVDO products. Your assumptions are correct. I am just using the Retro Tink 5x and not the Retrotink 4k. I am still very happy with the 5x, it still does a splendid job with gaming content, and with Laserdiscs it also does an ok job. Upgrading to the 4k at some point in the future might be a real option.

The 4k also should be better for analog video content than the 5x. I think I have read that the 4k has some extra profiles for that.
