So there's an FPGA board entitled neTV (an neTV2 board is out too but significantly more expensive). It allows you to overlay data on to an HDMI signal. It mentions subtitles being a built in application in the kit. https://www.adafruit.com/product/609There's a demo video here: https://kosagi.com/netv/netv_demo1.mp4Having looked at it a bit closer, I think this could well be an answer for overlaying subtitles to Laserdiscs, VHS etc on the assumption you are running said source(s) through a scaler or some other kind of device that will output your composite/svideo/scart source to HDMI. I'm keen to drop the Euro on it but hesitant in case I missed something and this doesn't do what i think it's capable of doing. Any other eggheads think this may do the job?

The most important feature of a genlock is the capability of being transparent when letter pixels don't need to be displayed. Maybe I missed something but this device only seems to placate sections of video (rectangles, basically) into the HDMI video stream. Unless your subtitles obstruct the background with a non-transparent black rectangle, I don't see how this device can gracefully insert subtitles. It seems more relevant to display current information inside airports or hospitals displays, while playing a video in loop in the background. Julien

Their description does say, "Inside, it's an Angstrom linux box running Webkit that features chroma-key video compositing," which to me suggests it could be capable of displaying subtitles gracefully. I think most of the workload would be in making timing the video and subtitle tracks as easy as possible. Color me interested, though. EDIT: Quote: It mentions subtitles being a built in application in the kit. I missed it; where does it mention this?

Ah apologies, faux pas on my part. From the blog of the creator: "NeTV classic mode thus enables applications such as subtitles and pop-up notifications by throwing away regions of source video and replacing it entirely with overlay pixels." https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?cat=17

It does mention overlaying PIP (picture in picture) but I have yet to find a mention/example for transparency in the overlay'ed video. Julien

I keep dreaming of a box that can overlay the transparent subtitles rendered in 720 or 1080. It looks like one of the SingMai boxes can do this, albeit using HD-SDI instead of HDMI: https://www.singmai.com/modules.htmlI also found a box like the Datavideo TC-100, but adding captions requires a PC running software. So far the NeTV-2 looks like best bet. Of course I can keep using my s-video CC decoder, but the aspiration was to use the data slicer on the eval board inside the AD7842 to output CC over serial, the render that in antialiased HD for a nicer look.
