I posted the long winded query below as sidewinder before Julien switched me back to forper.
The best response was Substance's:

the HDMI chipset on the Sony has
quicker rise and fall rates as
with most new 18Ghz chipset.
Try different HDMI cables with different quality and length.
If this doesn’t solve it, you will need to put an HDFury
like box to make the Sony speak to DVDO properly.
You probably should go with the HDFury
route as that would also allow you to bypass
HDCP2.2 for 4K discs.

There is an HDMI EQ in most chipsets.
It will compensate for the voltage drops over long cables.
The square waves rise and fall faster on high speed
18Ghz chipsets. Typically 1.5m to 2m is ideal.
Shorter cables have too high voltages and too long cables
too low. DVDO is having difficulty locking to the signal.
There is a small chance finding the ideal length cable that
will give DVDO the correct voltage range to work and solve
the issue. You can try an HDCP stripper,
it might do the trick for you.
You need a device that will mediate between hdmi 2.0b and
hdmi 1.2c.

Thanks Substance, but I feel we live in slightly different financial realities. Rather than purchase the AUD$400+ HDFury device which, through their discord channel, HDFury could not confirm would work in my case, I tried a cheapo AUD$10 HDMI to composite box and a (in the mail) AUD$40 HDMI to component box. So far the composite box has been pretty good and holds the picture. It feeds the downscaled picture to the DVDO which then upscales the picture to 1080 for the CRT. The results are quite good but I'm hoping that the HDMI -> component will be better.

I'm going to re-cable my entire system this weekend and the UHD universal player should replace a lot of boxes which I'll keep in storage in reserve 8-) .

Now I just need about 10 spare LD players (currently down to 1 working) and I'll be "media playback passive", and I can just let the good shows roll.. 8-)

Situation:
My CDP, SACD player and DVD player are all failing this year so I decided to get a brand new universal player. Sony UDP-X1100ES. I now need to feed this into my venerable DVDO iscan VP50 to get it to my display, a Sony HD CRT.

Signal chain:

Sony UDP > HDMI > DVDO iscan VP50 > RGBHV > Sony KVHR-M36 wide CRT

Initial Settings:

UDP all display settings at auto except for 4K upscaling which is set to "off".

VP50 - Factory default/Analogue HD out/SVGA resolution

Limited success:

I know the CRT can display a signal from the UDP, even playing back a UHD disc, because I can get it to momentarily display one. Basically when I engage the VP50 it picks up the signal for a few seconds, displays it (gorgeously) and then gray vertical bars converge to the centre and the picture disappears. The power light on the VP50 then flashes until I turn on HDCP mode, then the picture goes black and the flashing light ceases. Turning off HDCP mode gives me the same cycle as switching on initially, a momentary picture before it is eaten up by converging vertical gray bars. I think I've been through most other settings in the input stage mutliple times to see if I can get a different result. I can't. I figure I have got it set to display properly, it's just a matter of holding that picture.

Humble request:

Could anyone please recommend any settings (frame rate? or other?) that could make the VP50 hold/lock the picture from the UDP? Thank you.

Glad you got sorted out for the most part. So long as it all works and you are happy out then that's the main thing.

I would imagine that the HDFury Integral 2 would have sorted the issue out, but it's quite an outlay. I loved the Vertex 2, it was ridiculously powerful. Problem with the HDMI port failing so quickly made me question what the story is with quality control and components used. Savage piece of kit but again it's quite the outlay.

You've inadvertently reminded me I do need an HDMI Doctor 4K for something else though so thanks for that!
