Yes. He tried looking into building more units but some of the parts aren’t available to order anymore.

I see an increase in sales figures on older Lumagen products. This makes zero sense. Older Vision series and early Radiance models have zero relevance in the year 2021. I see people ask $1000+ on those. I don’t know if that’s due to people’s ignorance? They don’t know that only the 2124/2144 has the magic chip for LD?

Substance,

there are a handful of CRT Projection owners, like me.

4K is not possible and a good 1080P scaler with great bandwidth parameters
perfectly suited is the way to go.

having a great AD chipset is a plus too.

In anticipation of the full release of the Hardware Database for LDs, I made a quick entry for the R2144

Did my best to add the Radiance devices relevant to process/scaling SD contents to 1K or 4K:

Lumagen Radiance XD
Lumagen Radiance XS-3D
Lumagen Radiance XE-3D
Lumagen Radiance 2123
Lumagen Radiance 2124
Lumagen Radiance 2143
Lumagen Radiance 2144

You may now update these entries or submit new ones!

anyone can tell me what is the ~powerconsuption in watts for a Lumagen 2144? Composite in -> 1080p or 4k

How is the 24p conversion handled? Does it work without too many cadence breaks? (1-2 per movie?! like on a HQV Unit)

Comes with a 2.5 amp power supply so the maximum draw is 30W. I would say 20W is nominal. 24P depends on the content. For the most part very similar to HQV in film mode, probably worse in auto.

I have a Radiance Pro 5348 LAN. I also have a Radiance 2144 but currently unused because I don’t have a Laserdisc player in my setup right now.

Is LD-> 2144-> 5348-> display a good setup?

I believe substance designed it this way to bring LD to 4K and than aggregate other 4K inputs (BD UHD, Server) together on 18GHz ports with tight jitter with a better 4K60 CMS and HDR support.

So, basically taking LD to a good 4K then all 4Ks to an even better 4K ;-)

The current version of the Radiance Pro does a much better job at de-interlacing than the 21x4 IMO.

I scale to 1080i and output to a 4446 and am very pleased with the de-interlacing upscaling that the RP 4446 does over the Radiance.

The Radiance Pro firmware was revamped about a year ago. The new firmware improved 60Hz content processing significantly. Previously, I used the Radiance 2144 to upscale and telecine 480i60 to 1080p24 so I could take advantage of the far superior 24Hz handling of the Radiance Pro. This is no longer needed with the new firmware which handles 24Hz and 60Hz equally. I noticed the SD deinterlacing improved in the past year too.

Overall, the 2144 is sharper in deinterlacing but the Radiance Pro is virtually artifact free. I have yet to see any major combing in any material in the Radiance Pro. The VXP chipset in the Radiance 2144 doesn’t allow native interlaced output. Even if you select 1080i, SD video is deinterlaced, upscaled and interlaced to get there. The VXP chipset could be completely bypassed but this requires revamping the firmware completely which Lumagen has no interested in doing.

LD->2144->Radiance Pro is the best but LD->2144 alone is %95 there. It’s a bit uber luxury to add a $10k video processor to the chain for an “arguable” %5 improvement. I use the Radiance Pro because majority (if not all) of my viewing is 4k HDR content. The Radiance Pro 444X and 5348 are essentially identical except the latter has 2 additional HDMI inputs for a total of 10 inputs, upgraded power sections with shielded voltage regulators, better filtering and optimized signal paths which results in lower noise and jitter levels. It also has a buffer stage at its signal outputs which reclocks aka dejitters the signal. Video devices generally don’t care about low jitter but there is an audible difference in the audio quality if you have a reveling audio setup. Also keep in mind, the 5348 doesn’t come with a power supply. A 5A rated low noise linear power supply will run you about another $800-$1000.
