When I was shopping for a scaler.
I spoke to a seller who had a Lumagen for sale, I was told he had his power supply repaired.
Seller had to pry open the sealed power supply and de-solder bad caps and re-solder new caps.
Is this a common flaw on all model Lumagen scalers power supplies or is it just the specific 5Volt XS-3D power supply that the company used subpar lower grade components?

When or if my power supply goes bad, should I buy a new one directly from Lumagen or should I buy an aftermarket PS which might be of better and more consistent quality?

Radiance XS is over 12 years old now. You will see some units failing as any 10 plus year old electronics. You can still reach out to Lumagen support and they will sell you a replacement power supply and repair your XS for a fee if it breaks. Just keep in mind, this was a $4,500 device when new, replacement parts and repairs aren’t going to be cheap. You can buy an aftermarket power supply at your own risk or try to repair the original one. It’s a switch mode power supply, it can’t be many more than just a single capacitor in there. I would just get the replacement from Lumagen. It can’t be much worse than $60-80.

Cool, thanks for the info.

So it's more common the power supply fails than the scaler unit?

Thanks

Yes the power supply is more likely to fail. Do you already have one that is faulty?

No. not yet.
My Q. was merely if I should expect a failure for my PS in the near future

Depending on how you determine what the near future is.

Yes the Radiance XD/XS/XE have been discontinued for almost 10 years. The Radiance 2143 and the Radiance Pro are the only current products. Once the Radiance 2143 stocks(from 2018) are gone, Radiance 2143 will be discontinued as well.

Radiance Pro is the only unit in production. Radiance Pro had several hardware revisions since 2016 (introduction year). 2U chassis models are older revision and has been discontinued for about 3 years. 1U chassis models have had one main board and two HDMI I/O revisions. To get the latest revision units, you need to buy your Radiance Pro from someone who knows about these revisions or directly from Lumagen. The used ones you see for sale are usually the earlier revisioned hardware units.

The newest Radiance Pro 5348 model is the audiophile model with enhancements to the board to reduce EMI/RF noise, upgraded regulators and audiophile capacitors. This unit doesn’t come with any power supply but Lumagen recommends the Keces P8 single 8A output linear power supply for the cleanest power.
