Hello!

Newer user here, but encountered an issue with my LD-S1 that I hope I could get some advice to help troubleshoot.

As it stands, my LD-S1 plays CAV discs flawlessly, and for a time the same was true for CLV.
However, at some point, it started struggling to properly read CLV discs. The image is massively distorted, like it's having tracking issues, but the audio is unaffected. It will play the whole disc if I let it, I can even chapter seek, but the image from start to finish is all over the place, as well as black & white.

I had previously asked elsewhere for advice, and it was suggested to try cleaning the grip ring, and that seemed to work for a month or two, but it's reverted back to the same issue.
There is a very faint, low clicking noise when it first spins up CLV discs that is not present when playing CAV discs, but nothing else I can notice.

I've tried looking up other instances of people having this issue, but it tends to be the opposite from what I can find: Players unable to play CAV, but fine with CLV.

I can provide more info/photos if required, but any help that can get me pointed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Its been a while since I opened my LD-S1.
The grip ring is not an issue with this player since I believe its like a magnet or something that locks down when gripping.

You may need to try cleaning the laser, with water and a qtip only. DO NOT USE A CHEMICAL.

Try to see if that fixes anything, that was an issue I had.
Otherwise my guess is that these players are old and need to have capacitors replaced sooner than later.
I'm not a tech so do any repairs at your own risk.
Good luck.

So I think your general capacitor tip might have been the case, I had wanted to avoid doing a full tear-down of the LD-S1 because of how densely packed with boards, connectors, and cables these old players are but I decided to bite the bullet (took a whole day).

Changed out old and suspect capacitors, found a few that had begun leaking though were visually fine from the outside.
Seems to be back in working condition again!

Unrelated to the previous issue, but I might have to open it back up again in the future and see if I can repair the non-functioning IR/remote sensor. Will have to study the circuit in the manual and see what's gone wrong there...

Will do the task if needed but hate the idea, need to fix a guitar amp that's been sitting for 8 months, one single cap ugh.
