Hello,
Posting this as maybe someone has seen this issue before.

- It DOES play audio CD's (8cm & 12cm) no problem at all
- It will NOT play CD-Video disc (12cm or 20cm)
- It will NOT play Laser Disc

With the discs that do not play, the symptoms are the same;
- It takes and correctly clamps the disc (there is no slipping)
- The disc spins up but never seems to achieve the correct speed as when it reaches a certain speed can hear the motor pulsing.
- The disc type and chapters are not displayed on display
It will just sit there trying.

The lens has been cleaned.

Am I right in thinking that the CD-Video & LD spin faster than audio CD's?

Anyone think of a likely cause of this issue.

Cheers, Ant.

When playing a CD the video section turns off and the electronics sync with the disc rotation same as a CD player (sync at a specific data frequency and read the bits from the disc.

When playing a disc with Video the video section is turned on and the electronics syncs the video signal with the spindle motor rotation.

These are two totally separate operations of the player and CD only playback happens as the video circuitry has issues. You need to determine what went bad in the video section.

I don't think it has determined what type of disc is yet, the symbols on the display flash all of them until it's identified what the disc is.

When the drawer closes the laser moves to the 1st position or LD reading position and has the video circuitry for spindle motor control turned on. If you have a CD installed it does not detect a disc inserted at the first position so it moves to the 2nd position or CD reading position and switches to the CD circuitry to control the motor.

You have to think of this as two different players using a common laser and spindle motor but processing the data for these separately. If the video section is having issues it can act like no disc is installed when an LD is inserted, the 1st position could not properly process the LD sensing reflection and the second position will not get a reflection as it is sensing the label. Where if the CD section is working once the laser moves to the CD position or 2nd position the CD circuitry takes over and it will play.

I suppose then this could be a mechanical issue then, and the head is not in the correct position or able to get in the correct position, for reading video discs.

If it works for CD's then you have an issues in the video section electronics. NOT mechanical.
