I just got myself a LD-S9 which did the job flawlessly for about two weeks. After that it suddenly doesn't detect the Laserdisc I put in from time to time. Sometimes it it able to detect the disc and after a short period of spins up changes the spinning direction to the opposite. While spinning up it slips a bit and after another period it ends with a P5 error. I already changed the belt and replaced the grease but without success. Interestingly sometimes I'm able to start with Side B and works without a problem.

What would you suggest?

Which way is it spinning and which way is it supposed to spin?

This unit has the same grip ring slipping issues as the CLD type machines that use this mechanism. Here is a US eBay link for an equivalent grip ring used in the HLD-X9 and LD-S9. You need to replace this before proceeding any further.

Sounds like its spinning and then turning the other way to stop.
As Kurtis said, grip ring.

It definitively doesn’t turn into the other direction to stop the disc. It really is accelerating to Maximum speed and then simply turns of the Motor until the disc stops by itself.

oh, I misunderstood. Though you said clockwise and then changes direction after a short period.
Hopefully the grip ring will fix your issue.

smalls recap to my LD-S9:
I changed the loading belt, put grease in it, changed the grip ring for the spindle motor but nothing helped. After that I got myself a used oscilloscope to better understand what might be wrong. After reading and trying different points I found out that the monitor detector in my Laser-Pickup didn't return any usable signal even with the Laser working (checked that with my mobile). I checked the ribbon cable but that was ok. After that I tried to find a working pickup (VNP 1418A) and the Player came back to life.

So glad I got the unit working again

... now just a little bit of calibration ... and I'm in heaven again
