So, I went to use my LD-V8000 today, which I haven't done in a while. The tray opened pretty much normally, but when I went to close it, it started making a sort of motorboat sound, a very rapid "thud-thud-thud-thud-thud". Now, that can't be good. It sounds like the gear is jumping the track, which suggests that the switch which senses that the tray is all the way in is not functioning correctly. I did succeed in pushing the tray in with power off, & have it recognize the tray as parked when I applied power — actually it gave one little jerk, & at which the tray moved slightly & then stopped — but to do this I hit the tray on the front with my fist. Obviously this is no solution! The two things I am inclined to blame are, first, dust from the room, second, the heavy objects which have from time to time sat on top, but the V8000 is normally rugged enough that I wouldn't really expect either to make that much of a difference.

I plan to open it up & take a look, obviously, but I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen before.

With the top off, I observe that the left side (as seen from the front) of the disc tray starts to sink down into the playback position, while the right side does not. I need to take a closer look at the assembly diagrams in order to figure out what the offending part may be, & how to get at it.

If you remove the tray, you can try the manual clamping mechanism and see if the right side is putting up too much resistance.

The gears on the sync assembly have a tendency to crack and split. This will make the tray off angle and cause load problems. They are split on probably every third player I work on

Is the fix, then, likely to be the replacement of these gears?
If you can give me some hints as to the most expeditious way to verify & deal with the problem, that would be much appreciated.

Remove the tray and check the gears on the left and right hand side. You should be able to rotate the sync gear assembly by rolling a gear on the left side. If the gear(s) split it will be obvious to the naked eye. Good luck!!

Happened to me too, but I figured it was my hamhandedness while trying to adjust it ;/

Is there a way to glue it back together? (I was lazy and ordered a new one)

Yep, the two gears were cracked straight across. In addition, the spring on one of the latches under the tray had slipped off, causing the latch to jam when the tray tried to load. No telling whether one problem caused the other, & if so, which.

So, is there a fix for this? Does Pioneer sell these gears?

The replacement part is the shaft with the gears and plastic "mounts", all one unit. I believe it's "synchro gear assembly". I can check for the part number tomorrow. In the past the part was in stock...

I'll probably order that, then, but I'm also going to see if I can get somebody to 3D print me a few, based on the broken ones. That way, if they break, I can replace them come what may. Maybe there is even a market for them, if this is a common problem.

I bought the new part, & installed it with no real problems, but I'm still planning on making some of those gears, since they seem to be the weak point of this design.

Synchro gears now available for purchase. Search VXA1163, DXB1108 on ebay and you'll find them.
