So, I went to use my LD-V8000 today, which I haven't done in a while. The tray opened pretty much normally, but when I went to close it, it started making a sort of motorboat sound, a very rapid "thud-thud-thud-thud-thud". Now, that can't be good. It sounds like the gear is jumping the track, which suggests that the switch which senses that the tray is all the way in is not functioning correctly. I did succeed in pushing the tray in with power off, & have it recognize the tray as parked when I applied power — actually it gave one little jerk, & at which the tray moved slightly & then stopped — but to do this I hit the tray on the front with my fist. Obviously this is no solution! The two things I am inclined to blame are, first, dust from the room, second, the heavy objects which have from time to time sat on top, but the V8000 is normally rugged enough that I wouldn't really expect either to make that much of a difference.
I plan to open it up & take a look, obviously, but I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen before.

The gears on the sync assembly have a tendency to crack and split. This will make the tray off angle and cause load problems. They are split on probably every third player I work on

If you can give me some hints as to the most expeditious way to verify & deal with the problem, that would be much appreciated. Remove the tray and check the gears on the left and right hand side. You should be able to rotate the sync gear assembly by rolling a gear on the left side. If the gear(s) split it will be obvious to the naked eye. Good luck!!

The replacement part is the shaft with the gears and plastic "mounts", all one unit. I believe it's "synchro gear assembly". I can check for the part number tomorrow. In the past the part was in stock...
