| Post subject: | [LD-S2] Questions |
I've been trying out some of my equipment now that I have the Video Essentials LD. My best results are LD Player Comp->> OnkyoTX-NR3009->> Samsung Plasma Simplicity seems to be the best route for me. Now here is where the concerns begin. I like the Noise free picture the LD-S2 provides but it is rather soft looking I actually like the sharp image Cld-D703 provides (with NR OFF) but hate the noisy picture Experts, have a look at the attached pictures.(apparent problems in Orange boxes ld-s2 picture) LD-S2 LD Player Comp->> OnkyoTX-NR3009->> Samsung Plasma Attachment: I am wondering what is going on with the LD-S2 ?? Is it just an Adjustment/Alignment issue that can be resolved ?? DC |

Hopefully kbahr and/or Duncan will chime in here. I find it odd that the LD-S2 wouldn't reproduce the 1.5MHz of color on the S&W test plate. |

The default for the S2 of "Y" DNR Off and "C" DNR ON. Press the DNR button on front of the player until both are turned off and see if that helps the Onkyo process the signal as the issue is how the Onkyo handles the signal from the S2. It is true the 703 will have a sharper picture and you are also correct that the S2 is much more noise free. It comes down to your preference, smooth film-like picture or sharper picture not concerned with background grain from noise. The is no further adjustment needed with your S2 if it does not have crosstalk. Now if you play a movie would your ever see the orange issue? Sometimes test patterns can make you loose sleep over issues not seen during normal viewing. |

i agree, it took me a little to even see what your issue was. what i would do is get it as close as possible with the test pattern and then just get a film that you know how it's supposed to look. then tweek it a little to get it right IF you see any issues when the movie is playing. also you get the issue with the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ box but not with the ///////////// box on the other side not circled in orange. to me this is just a test pattern issue and you will drive yourself crazy if you haven't already  ________________________________ the rein-o official signature: |

C DNR causing that makes sense, since the 4.43 stripes are a lot sharper on the S2. |

elahrairrah-Yes, the response in the 1.5mhz bar was the most glaring issue. Curtis- Yes,I have the NR turned off on the ld-s2 What I will do is crop the boxes and post them individually should be easier to see. Thanks everyone check back soon |

BTW, in my experiments I've found my copy of VE to be rather... odd and noisier at some frequencies. I suspect that the AC3 track is too strong - so try other disks and look for any oddities there. |

Poor chroma bandwidth ??? Attachment: This is where the LD-S2 seems to be having trouble with the 1.5Mhz. My 703 is perfect here. |

Looks like a 2D comb filter that it isn't playing nice with. |

i'm sorry, this is such a minor issue. do you see this issue when playing films or not??? if yes, you must pick a player and keep that one and sell the other that you don't prefer. if no, just enjoy the films. ________________________________ the rein-o official signature: |

Looking at the test pattern trying to see what's wrong gives me a headache. OK, you see a problem with the test pattern but how about when enjoying a movie? |

Yup, in actual movie-watching there shouldn't be any problems. If there still are, try a different comb filter setup. Aside from the edge areas and 1.5mhz color, it looks pretty sharp. |

I have an LDS2, and a 1009 (same video processing). First how did you capture the images? I assume you're running HDMI to the TV at 1080p. When I had the LDS2 hooked up, I only had a little bit of noise in the 400 box with the moving zone plate test. You get some circular rainbows on the sides of the moving ball, but none when it's stationary or anywhere else. As far as the color boxes at the top, I can't remember, the chroma bars on the bottom were fine for me. Go to the full screen SMPTE bars (previous screen), you'll see saw tooth artifacts (green/magenta and depending on the player, yellow/cyan also), it's the price you pay with the Vida processor for near artifact free motion. When comparing the LDS2 to other high end players through the Onkyo at 1080p the performance is very similar. There isn't a perfect comb filter, if the static images are perfect, you will get artifacts with fast motion and vice versa. You can improve the chroma bars on the bottom and reduce some noise turning on the Onkyo DNR (random and mosquito). The only comb filter I've found that is (very slightly) better with the zone plate test than the Onkyo is the X0 with 3D turned all the way up, but then the motion artifacts are horrible. I did post a few zone plate images for a few other players, and different connection methods some time ago. And I will do more once all my players are back in good working order... One other thing is check the cables and connections, try the BNC on the S2. Good luck. |
