I don't have the service manual. If someone happens to have a copy and could upload it that'd be amazing.

Here you go: https://gofile.io/d/NDm3Xq

I've submitted it to the database. Good luck. Hopefully now you can fix it!

I ordered an oscilloscope, hopefully when it gets here I'll be able to do some more serious testing and diagnostics. Although without the test disc I can't do most of the alignments in the service manual. If all goes well I'll be able to solve the issue and post my finding on here, then several people will have working players again, including me!

Yeah the test disc is more important than the scope. Also save your self a lot of trouble and buy a used analog scope.

I've noticed that 95% of the tests need that special disc, my guess is the disc alone costs more than a new player. I ended up getting a rather nice Hantek DSO5102P, it's a very nice and very capable $260 scope. Since I plan on using it for a slew of other projects I wanted one with as many features as possible. Getting a new one has far more benefits than getting an old one most notably it'll be much more reliable/accurate than a 30+ year old scope.

It is about $100 shipped for the disc from PacParts.

My Tektronix DSO can have trouble seeing some of the waveforms. Persistence mode helps but still not as clean as my analog scope. I'm far from an expert with scopes, so I could just have something set wrong.

I'm in the same boat, this would be my first ever scope. Thankfully it has a button to automatically set everything and an XY mode to mimic and analog scope. I know Tektronix makes really nice stuff, would you happen to know what model you have? The one I got was really a spur-of-the-moment type thing and I don't have the extra to get the disc too, I'll just have to do what I can and hope for the best..lol

My digital one is TDS 2014B. Someone was selling it for 1/4 of what it sold for on eBay so I scooped it up.

My analog one is an ancient Hitachi on its last leg. I'm looking to replace it with one of the later generation Tektronix. The older analog scopes can indeed be sketchy. This is my second cheap find and the X channel does not function properly. I'll try to clean the switches again at some point.

Just wondering if anyone ever found a solution to this issue? I picked up an S1 recently and I'm in the same boat, it will recognise that a disc is there but for whatever reason, the laser can't seem to focus on it. Would it be possible to adjust the focus gain?

Cheers,
Dave.

Try cleaning the laser, use something NOT ALCOHOL on the laser, something that won't remove any possible film on the laser
Some players do have a film but I don't know which ones, be safe rather than sorry.

When it doubt use distilled water.

Try not to tweek the pots, this is a really nice player and I hate to read that they are dying and also don't want to read they are being
broken since they are older now.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Rein-o, unfortunately I've already cleaned the laser with IPA, it was the first thing I did after seeing that it wouldn't play!
I wasn't aware of special coatings on lasers, is there a chance I could have made the issue worse?
Cheers,
Dave.

I don't think so, I know there is a newer player that it will have issues on, maybe the LD-S9 not sure now.

Other techs should chime in to help but I'm also posting for others in the future that read these posts to try and stay away from the alcohol.

On another note, could you have left a film on the laser? I've done that with cleaning other stuff, finish on some furniture etc.

I'm no tech and I know you can adjust stuff but just wait to get some clarity from others who have more knowledge on these.
Hope you get it running, I love mine and when I got mine there was an issue where the tray wouldn't go back in, I think I gave it a
strong hit to get it back in and all has been goon until I had a dirty laser and its all good yet again.

Well just incase I did leave a film on the laser, I'll give it a other clean in the morning with some distilled water like you've suggested. Hopefully that'll do the trick!
