Hi everyone, so i got hooked again on laserdiscs collecting and decided to enjoy my laserdiscs at their maximum by using digtal output instead of rca.
So I went and bought a toslink cable, but as the title says, my optical output on my 925 is broken and the toslink cable cannot be plugged in.
I never used it, for the 20+ years i had this player.

Image
(the output itself)

My theory on this is that when the player got moved sometimes in his life (it happened a lot of times), the little plastic thingy that is issued with every thing that have a toslink output supposed to protect the digital output got ripped off the player and broke the whole thing (maybe got stuck when passing through a door or something)

I guess that the output is unrepairable, what i'd like to know is wether the output can be replaced with spare parts or am I forced to get a player with a non broken output ?

How is it possible to destroy a connector like that. It seems to be burned.
However, I think it's possible to find an equivalent female connector, unsolder the defective one and place the new.

It would be nice to unsolder it and check the perfect equivalent.

A simple search on Google: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/XYFW-Female-Pcb-Optical-Toslink-Connector_60674916079.html

You are going to have to search up parts and replace as miskia said.

But you do all repairs at your own risk.

That’s a super easy fix for any repair person so you should find one if you can’t do the work yourself.

I can barely even tell what I’m looking at there, btw. It’s really hard to imagine exactly how that kind of damage happened. Are we sure the old isn’t still partially there blocking the port?

This shouldn't be too hard of a fix. The replacement part should be cheap. If you do not have soldering experience, just pay an electronics repair person to do this for you.

I didn't even look at the picture.
It looks like the flap door that has been mangled with a screwdriver or something.

Wonder if he really tried to put the toslink in?

Yeah, I can’t tell if that’s the door or the broken chunk of the plug or connector. It almost looks like it may still work. All the scratches around it make it look like someone was stabbing at it with something.

The 925 (as well as probably all LD players I have seen) have never had optical outputs with the newer spring actuated dust cover flap doors.

In any case, looks like something definitely mangled this plug. But the good news (as everyone has mentioned); finding and soldering in a replacement should not be an issue. Would just need to remove the old one for now to check its dimensions and overall shape to ensure the new one will fit through the existing hole on the back panel.

I can't remember about the newer ones but Yes, there are black plugs that would protect, my 3070 came with one stock.
So none of the newer LD players ever had flap doors, makes sense that it would be a newer design.

The 925 is the the plug type dust cover type of socket, it's a pretty easy job to get access to replace it - You'll need to have some experience with de-soldering, either using desoldering wick or a solder sucker, if you havent done this before then practice on something you don't mind breaking as you could lift the pads and then cause yourself a whole other issue! :)

When removing the MAIN ASSY board (the bottom main board with the toslink on it) you'll need to also remove the back panel of the player so you can lift the board out, be careful not to damage the ribbon cables when taking out and re-installing the board

Let me know if you need any help, I currently have my 925 in pieces so if you want any pics I can provide

I don't even have any soldering tools, but i'd like to see a picture of the inside of the player where the plug is placed

Unless you are independently wealthy you should invest into a soldering iron for basic repairs if you plan to collect vintage electronics.

Where my tweezers are pointing is the part in question from the inside of the player

If you can still see light coming out, I'd just cut/dremel/pry & get the opening large enough to stick the toslink in. Might just be a job for duct tape. If the cable still aligns even marginally you have a good chance of it being 100% functional. The light junction isn't that picky.

Now in my case(s) the CLD-3030 I just bought yesterday, I found the socket completely popped off the board & still laying right there inside, and my Sony MD-650 is already in the shop with something stuffed in the socket so hard I lost where the object ended & the socket began when trying my damdest to dig it out. (Perhaps the same guy owned yours & mine???)

Anyway, Good Luck!

For information I replaced his optical connector (by resoldering a new one)
ryosaeba84 was not far from my home, I proposed to do it for him.

It wasn't just for silence of the lamb, just side B playback didn't worked anymore on all discs.

:( I am still sorry that you lost the player.
I do hope you can try a very small turn at a time to get the player back up and running but I think it may be for parts only now.

Good luck on getting another player soon
