My Pioneer CLD-D515 has just stop reading/playing PAL discs. On the actual unit the display states 'Play', the motor spins and the disc spins. Everything seems normal yet nothing happens, eventually the ERROR CODE P5 is displayed. Iv'e changed the loading belt, cleaned the lens, lubricated the guide rods all the usual stuff. Still nothing!! The unit plays NTSC and CD's just fine!

Has anyone else encountered this fault?

1. Does PAL spin at a higher rate?

2. Is the Spindle Motor faulty?

3. Is the lens unable to read the TOC?

I would appreciate any help with this matter! I love this unit as it been my backup unit for a few years!!

I think PAL spins a little lower - 1500 RPM as opposed to the 1800 RPM on NTSC?

You also need to consider the fact that it can still play NTSC discs so it doesn't seem likely there's anything wrong with the laser itself.

Yeah, it would be a slower speed because it’s for 50hz countries.

There may be separate adjustments for PAL and NTSC discs and as soon as I typed that I began wondering how it even knows the difference...it has to do some kind of check on the signal right? It’s not something in the TOC, is it?

The best guess I can make without knowing the internal workings of the player is that if it uses a separate circuit for PAL discs, that circuit has been damaged in some way. We have a service manual here: https://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pio ... /CLD-D515/ but hell if I understand any of that.

Just a total guess here but maybe the microprocessor is just a bit locked up. It could explain why the NTSC and CD functions are still operable.

Have you had the player unplugged from power for an extended period? This could help reset the microprocessor and bring the PAL functionality back.

Unfortunately the Service Manual linked to above just seems to be an 'AC3 board' supplement to the full manual.

Looks like P5 is a "Spindle error - Setup, rotation start" (see here: https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=25865#p25865) which might point to a motor problem, although odd that it doesn't also affect NTSC discs.

Out of interest, have you tried a lighter-weight PAL disc - eg a 20cm or 12cm CDV disc? How many PAL discs have you tried... if you only have two or three, it might be that they're all past their best...

And on that note, have you listened to an entire CD on it? A CD spins slower towards the end of the disc, just like a CLV disc does.

That is a very good point, if the discs are PDO pressed & early ones in particular they may not be readable by the player.

Never heard of that issue & the few 515s that passed through my hands were all good bar one that had been messed with.

Hope the player turns out to be fine.

Cheers

Yeah. I would try a 8” PAL disc if at all possible.

There may be a separate adjustment for “PAL sync” or something. A 60hz pot and a 50hz pot or something like that. The player may be just slightly too out of range to play a PAL disc.

Usually if you get a spindle code on an NTSC player it’s because it can’t get the big disc up to speed but PAL discs spin slower and it plays NTSC so we know that’s not it exactly.

Adjustment may save this but I wouldn’t adjust anything unless you know what it does.

Situation is that most or none of us have any experience working on pal players let alone combi players.

Have you taken the top off and are we sure there is only 1 laser for both pal and ntsc?
Could P5 possibly be from slipping? Could the label on your NTSC play fine but slips on pal????

PAL/NTSC players use the same laser.

If they could afford to put two lasers in one player, I'm pretty sure the first thing they'd done was get rid of the absurd carousel assembly for two-sided playback!
