Post subject:  Looking for someone to repair a Pioneer CLD-D504

Hello. My name is Mark, and I joined lddb today. I was referred to this forum by Kurtis.

Is there anyone here who provides laserdisc player repair service - or knows of anyone who does - in the Southern California area?

I have a Pioneer Laserdisc/DVD combo player unit, CLD-D504. The LD tray does not open. The DVD/CD tray does, but an inserted disc does not spin when loaded (I verified this by taking the lid off to see what happens inside). The motor whines, and then the DVD disc will eject.

This seems to be a common issue, but I am not proficient with DIY repairs on consumer electronics. If there exists a SoCal a repair shop that I can send (or bring) my unit to, that would be the best option for me to see this unit working again.

Thanks to anyone who reads this message. I look forward to any replies.

Regards,
Mark

I can't help with someone doing repair in your area but, heads up, the CLD-D504 isn't an LD/DVD combo player. LD/DVD combo players will have a model number starting with "DVL", while LD/CD players will have a model starting with "CLD".

Have you tested with a CD instead of a DVD?

Otherwise, the LD tray not opening is likely as simple as a belt.

Thanks for the correction. Based on your suggestion I did try loading a CD, but the result was the same. The tray closes, the clamp shuts on the disc, but the disc does not spin and a mechanical whine is heard. Then the CD is ejected.

I may have to look at some online tutorials or videos. Does anyone here know of a good reference page or YouTube vid showing how to service Pioneer laserdiscs? Alternately, if anyone just joined in, my first choice is to take it or send it to a repair person (or shop) located in Southern California. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you once again!

That sounds like a bad optical block or out of focus maybe?

At least we have both User and Service manuals for this device:

Have you tried replacing the load belt?

With the player open, try locating the front loading mechanism pulley. While it's trying to load a disc, reach under the tray and give it a little nudge in whichever direction it gives (anyone remember the direction?); if that helps the player finish the loading procedure, the belt is your most likely culprit. I had the same symptom myself but mine would still play CDs so it's possible yours is even more loose than mine was.

I can't tell if it is a broken M-Holder or loading isn't completing. Sounds like the former. Any error codes displayed on front of unit? Something like U1 or E3?

Hey everyone. Thank you for the latest responses. The answer to the question of error code on the display is that there were none.

Here's a quick update.

When searching the web, I stumbled across this video:

The demonstration of the failure is exactly what was happening in my case. The guy in the video confirmed that the load belt needs replacing. I followed his suggestion to check for otherwise correct operation by manually helping the loader finish locking the disc and start spinning. I was able to do so and was able to play some laserdiscs.

So next, I need to acquire a replacement belt for Pioneer CLD-D504.

I am eying this one on eBay:

Does this look good? I confirmed that I can do this procedure myself using the linked video as a guide.

Thanks again to everyone for the latest responses. I will definitely check back here for additional posts

Great news!

If you do get a working replacement, feel free to post an update in [GLOBAL] Replacement BELTS to confirm which model fits the CLD-D504.
