A few days ago, I opened up my CLD-97 to clean the lens because I was having severe playback issues (staticky audio playing laserdiscs, CDs almost never playing at all). I gently wiped it off with a q-tip, and it worked fine again, for a few minutes. Then CDs started skipping and LDs started having bad tracking problems.
Now, it just makes this constant noise any time the player is turned on. I opened it up to see what was going on, and the laser pickup assembly keeps moving up and down (tilting) non stop:
Does anyone know why this might be happening, and what I could do to fix it?

Thanks for the link. That seems like exactly what's happening to me, except that the laser itself still seems to work fine (it will still play discs, but it cuts in and out in time with the tilting).

Trying to remember how I fixed this before, memory starts to go when your in your 60's. I believe the op amp that drives the tilt motor on the main board went bad and I had to replace it.
Thanks for sharing that Kurtis. Definitely a weird failure.
I think that would be IC804 (LA6510) in FTS section of main board in the attached image. Tilt error comes in to it on pin 7, and tilt motor out of pin 9.

Good to see my memory hasn't totally failed. Three more years to retirement and then the time to really spend on player repair. Hopefully I'll make it.
