I have a mostly-working CLD-D704 I’ve been troubleshooting, and I’ve run into a bit of a wall. When I picked it up it had various issues loading discs and would spin down very slowly, so I replaced the loading belt as well as the grip ring. That fixed most of the issues and it loads/plays discs just fine, though now it has a minor issue only when starting cold.

Basically if the unit has been left off for a few hours with a laserdisc in the tray, when I turn it on it stalls for a bit and then starts to squeal for 8-10 seconds, then it ejects the disc. Once the tray is closed it loads and plays without issue, even if I cycle the power. Problem only recurs if left off for a few hours.

My best guess right now is it’s either the loading belt is slightly out of spec or the top clamp needs to be lubricated. Does anyone have any other thoughts before I pop this thing open again? Thanks!

You need to open the unit and see if it is a mechanical squeal from parts trying to move or a capacitor squealing. Just saying there is a squeal is too vague. If it is a capacitor then you'd start replacing the caps in the power supply.

didn’t actually know capacitor squeal was a thing!

sounds more like a mechanical/rubber noise to me, but I’ll pull it and take a peek inside

It is super high pitched from my encounters.

I always grease the bearings in the clamp to reduce noise, but that shouldn't be causing the playback issues you described.

OK I think I’ve got this squared. The belt I ordered from Console5 was just too large (or it stretched out? Can’t be certain)

Dropped in the belt I got from cd-parts on ebay and it’s back in action.
