Hello everyone, I just joined this forum as for Christmas my wife and in-laws indulged my teenage film geek dream and found me a laserdisc player. A Pioneer CLD-1070, which according to the eBay seller was tested and worked however upon setting it up the disc will load from the tray and show play on the display, but then after a few seconds it just goes to the standard display and won’t play or do anything. Having already done a little investigating I keep hearing about replacing the drive belt. I am not much of a hardcore tech guy, so replacing a part on a 30 year old system would be new to me, but I’d be up for doing it. I was going to take off the case cover to inspect it this week and just wanted to ask if anyone here had some insight into what to check for to find out the issue. Thanks in advance.

I tried a CD, same issue. I took the cover off and my wife noticed that the tray that the laser runs on wasn't moving. So I'm guessing it's what needs a belt replacement. I don't know if that's the drive belt or where it would be located but I believe that is the issue.

If it won't play a CD then its another issue I believe.
Could be dead laser or adjustments or centering.

Read up and make sure before you start doing repairs.
May be better off contacting the seller and getting a refund as there are no longer parts available for these players
and if the seller sold it as working its really not.

As above.... if bought through ebay as working and it is not then you are pretty sure to get a refund but don't leave it too long before starting the process.

Good luck.

Here is a pic of the laser pick-up sled.

The part circled in blue is the carriage drive assembly so you should look to see if the smaller wheel is turning and moving the belt (you should be able to see some movement when you press the open / close button). If you only see the smaller wheel spinning on its own and no belt movement, your belt needs replacing. Part number for the belt is VEB-1077.

For the part highlighted in red, you may need to re-oil this w/ a light machine oil if it doesn't feel a bit slippery but I would not worry about this until you know the belt on the drive assembly needs replacing first.

So I found a guy who does electronics repair on old audio and video game/pinballs and he has 30 years experience dealing with Panasonic products too. He's taking a look at the player and will let me know exactly what the issue is. Thank you everyone who responded in this. I just want to get the system working, I bought a few cool disc sets and I'm excited to see how they look.

Well, just keep us informed on the progress. 1070 was always a nice robust machine and worth saving if you get it working again.

Sadly the guy called me to tell me that the 1070 is unplayable as it had several plastic parts shattered, likely due to shipping. I don't think eBay will be much help, my wife got it over a month ago so it's past the 30 day window.

That's sad to here. I always try to avoid shipping players @ all cost; too much risk of breakage.

There is always a slight chance to still repair it if you know what particular pieces broke on the machine but it would probably be a lot of work to get it swapped out.

Yeah, sadly my wife got so excited seeing the player on eBay with remote and manual she took a chance on it.

I'm feeling more hopeful about the CLD-D505 I mentioned since the guy said that needed a specific part to replace. That I bought local.

You can always send me a PM or Email me at kbahr@comcast.net to see if I have anything refurbished. I do not advertise here but you can always ask privately.
